Incredible New Orleans flavors lovingly coaxed by a chef with heart and a California consciousness. Easy to get tasty flavors from the usual crutch (butter, bacon, sugar, Paula Deen types) but chef john does not take the easy way out yet creates such spectacular flavors. And makes the idea of vegan dining finally worth entertaining. A cosy, hideaway meant for the locals. Sharing the good luck we had hearing about it from a local inn keeper (Lands End).

We came for the bacon wrapped dates, we stayed all night for the fun. I'm a little late getting to this, so late in fact that we're heading back to Cannon Beach today for another getaway and are planning another visit to Sweet Basil's tonight. Our first time around, we were in town for the Stormy Weather Art & Wine Festival in November and had the luck of ending up here after poking our heads into several other restaurants in town. When my wife and I arrived around 7pm, they had a live band playing and it was standing room only in the bar area. Since we were on vacation with nowhere else to go, we decided we'd stick around. Best decision of the weekend. The bartender, Ted, treated us like family from the moment he saw us standing by the door. The band was great--they even setup for an encore performance after taking down all their gear when a second wave of customers came in an hour or so before closing time. That's when the dancing started. Great wine. Great people. Great time. At the end of the night it had begun raining and Ted lent us his umbrella for our walk back to our hotel (thanks again!). Lucky for us, the forecast calls for clear skies and more good times at Sweet Basil's tonight....

My wife and I really wanted to check out this restaurant after reading all the reviews, and have mixed reviews on this place. if your looking for a complete dining experience you will be sorely disappointed, service was extremely slow, nonexistent, plating of food looked like something you cooked up in the your own kitchen. I was sort've expecting this, and was really hoping the food would knock me out, when our order finally did arrive I was not disappointed. it was awesome, could've been due to me being extremely hungry but the food kicked butt. My wife had the Turkey / Basil wrap, I ordered the Pulled Pork Melt, both had alot of flavor and tasted really awesome. Not sure why it took so long to get our food for two sandwiches, but worth the wait. my overall recommendation would be if you have time to kill, and do not care about service, you have to try this place. The Sandwiches totally ROCK. I would've given them a 4.5 stars if service was better.

I have been wanting to try this place for a while but am never there when they are open. I got in for lunch today and was pleasantly surprised. I ordered the field roast rueben and my companion ordered the grilled cheese and a bowl of the tomato soup. The waiter was nice and gentile. Service was a bit slow as they were busy however. The food came and was nicely accompanied by corn chips and cole slaw. My rueben was well made. The sauerkraut was pretty fresh, the sauce was slightly tangy, and the sun dried tomato field roast was thickly sliced. All in all pretty good, although I would have preferred a bit less cheese. I am looking forward to coming back here when I return to cannon beach!

While other tourists were chowing-down on deep-fried and more expensive fare, we found a healthy alternative for lunch while visiting Cannon Beach, Oregon. At the very end of the main drag we found Sweet Basil's Cafe, in fact, we almost missed it. Decorated a la "shabby chic" and very dog-friendly - there is a big bucket of doggie treats next to the cash register - seating inside is a tad cramped, so we ate outside at picnic tables even though it was a fairly chilly day. All the food is organic, FRESH, and locally grown. The menu is vegan and vegetarian-friendly but can also make carnivores happy. Our waitress was friendly and 71 years old (maybe the owner's Mom?) Two in our group had the black bean soup special and raved about how excellent it was. I had a veggie wrap that had a very good mint pesto on the side. Most all plates come with stone-ground tortilla chips and a mildly sweet (ramekin size) cole slaw. It was our first visit to Cannon Beach and probably won't be the last, Sweet Basil's Cafe was a real treasure find!

This place caught my mom's eye since it was known for fresh and organic food. I split a crab salad and pork cubano sandwich with my sister. The crab salad was pretty good, I liked how they put in a lot of crab meat but the cubano was our favorite. It had pulled pork and ham in the the sandwich. Its a pretty small place so if you're looking for a place to sit indoors, try going somewhere else.

Excellent seafood! We ordered the Thai Coconut Salmon (slightly spicy) and Halibut topped with crab and a butter sauce. Live jazz music was playing in the background. Great service too!

We attended one of the Cannon Beach "Winemaker's Dinners" at Sweet Basil's Cafe. Our winery was Amity. The food was GREAT, and the wine pairings went very well with everything. However, the portion sizes were generous enough that much of it left with us in a to-go container. Which wasn't really welcome, as we were just in town for a few days. Still, the chef did a great job, and the man serving us was wonderful, too. Especially considering the chef and the rest of the staff (including the dishwasher!) all worked together in a space not much bigger than my kitchen at home - and mine is pretty tiny. Next time we're in Cannon Beach, we'll stop here.

Great location and great concept. However, just like the rest of the busy weekend in Cannon Beach, the service was horrible. HORRIBLE. I wanted to do a wine flight but the server said they were too busy even though there were just a few other covers. It took freckin' 30 minutes for a cheese and cracker plate to arrive. Not acceptable. It is unfortunate that the weekend of Cannon Beach dining was marred by such poor service.

We go to Cannon Beach every few months because my husband visits clients there often. This is his yelp account. While he was working, I went with my sister in law and two children to Sweet Basil's Cafe. I've been wanting to try it for awhile since I am vegetarian and thought it would be perfect to take my sis in law since she is vegan. We checked to see if they had a children's menu and they did so we went in to be seated. We were ignored. That should have been our first sign. After standing there for 10 minutes or so we were approached more with the attitude of "what do you want" than "how can we help you?" We were told to go to the back of the cafe to sit and when I asked for clarification the waitress sighed and walked us back as if it were asking too much. She never came back for a drink order. After getting tired of sitting in the corner I told my sister in law maybe they weren't fond of kids here so we should ask for a to go order and take them to the park. I'll be the first to say that I don't think rowdy kids should be in restaurants. Luckily my two know that and were behaving very well. I went to the front to ask for a to go order and was told they were too busy. The menu stated that to go orders can't be made when they are busy so I understood and decided we should go elsewhere. I walked around front to get the stroller I had put outside around the corner while my sister in law ushered my children out. On the way, my daughter fell down and cried. My sister in law reported that the waiter stopped to laugh at her until she gave him a dirty look. He's lucky I was out front because I wouldn't have been so easy on him. I'm guessing the food is decent just by looking at the menu, but the service is horrible. I especially don't think children are welcome and would have appreciated knowing that before I wasted my time and my children's time. Instead we went to a cafe around the corner that was very welcoming and I will be going back there on our next visit this fall!

One of the best places to eat dinner in Cannon Beach. My wife and I each had the special which was fresh halibut fillet covered by a crab Oscar sauce with a small amount of potatoes and carrots. Simply delicious! If you like gourmet prepared food, this is the place to eat. They also had a small band playing in the wine bar but the volume was low enough to carry on a conversation while still enjoying the music. Basil's is our favorite dinner place in Cannon Beach.

The restaurant was small but quaint and intimate. The length of time until the meal was served was exceeding log, but the wait was worth it, as the meal was excellent (chicken with bearnaise sauce and local broccoli, yummy). We shared a bottle of the Chenin Blanc - very good.

Our new favorite breakfast/lunch spot in Cannon Beach! We had walked past many times but never noticed it. Sweet Basil's is along the side of the building so it can be easy to miss if your not looking for it. We actually found this on the iPhone app and after reading a few reviews how could we not try it! We decided to grab a table out side since the "sun" had finally decided to show up. Dennis welcomed us like family! I had a pulled pork BBQ sandwich and my wife had the Italian panini and we were both very impressed! Great coleslaw too. Everything was perfect, so much so we went back for Breakfast and tried the Waffles Yummmm! Don't miss this Place!!

We've eaten in most of the places in Cannon Beach and most are not worth a repeat visit. We ate here on a rainy Easter sunday when not much else was open--and we're glad we gave it a try. Their atmosphere is cozy (real jazz not smooth), vintage booths, great service/people, and the pulled pork Po'boy is outta sight! The desserts are homemade and look divine but we were too stuffed to try any. Even if you're not an organic eater it's worth eating at Sweet Basil's!

Well, I wish I could tell you what the food tasted like. The moron at the door, on two consecutive nights, one at 6 pm and the other at 9 pm, told us the restaurant was at capacity and the kitchen couldn't handle the work load. This is with 5 visible tables w 2-5 people each. Complete, complete incompotents.

My boyfriend and I stumbled upon this place on a Sunday night. Our intention was to grab a bottle of wine and bring it over to the beach to watch the sunset since the wine stores were already closed. Ted Newman was a wonderful host, explaining to us New Yorkers about Oregon wine. He rolled out the red carpet, allowing us to try several wines. Thanks to Ted, my new obsession is Oregon wines. Delicious! We had no plans for the next day except to drive to Portland, he took out the map showing us every great winery along the way and incorporated our tastings to include a taste of these locals. Wonderful, simply wonderful. We also got to enjoy some excellent live music. While we missed most of the sunset, it was am experience I did not expect and one I will always remember. Thank you to the staff of Sweet Basil's.

Normally we would eat at The Bistro, but it burned down since we were here last. Had hoped for a nice evening here with interesting menu selections. Liked the minimal wine list. Bartender was the waiter. He was attentive but not very forthcoming with information about the menu. My partner's salmon in Thai curry sauce was very overdone. Anyone cooking in Oregon should know how to properly cook fish. The sauce looked like it came out of a can. My veggie pot pie was also like something out of can with a hunk of puff pastry on top. This cost way too much money for a very poor meal. That part hurt, but the singer in the lounge sang out of key, to make matters even worse. I like this place for lunch but will never eat here again for dinner.

As others have already noted, the restaurant is small and is off the beaten path in Cannon Beach. My wife and I had the Cubano sandwich and the Crab Louie Wrap. Both were very good and the portions were generous. However, the service was slow, and the prices, while not overpriced like most restaurants on Hemlock, it also wasn't inexpensive. Just good sandwiches at typical tourist prices ($10 each)

I feel terrible. I came here in March and I promised the waiter I would write a review here, and I am just now doing it. But, this place was fantastic!!!!!! Cannon Beach is one of the most special spots in the world, in my opinion. We took 2 friends out here from Portland (where we were vacationing). One of the friends is vegan, and the other has Celiac's, so we were hoping we would be able to find something in CB that would work. Sweet Basils was PERFECT!!! This place is in the heart of town and looks like a little cottage. They have a kitchen right as you walk in the door, with a really friendly chef churning out delicious food. It almost feels like you are in someone's house! They have a great wine list with lots of Oregon choices and good prices. The menu is spectacular! Three of us got gnocchi al pesto, which was awesome and homemade. The salads were fresh and tasty, and the atmosphere couldn't be beat. Dessert blew us all away. The chef's mother makes all of the treats, and she creates some of them with both vegan diets and gluten intolerances in mind. There was something for each of us!!! We couldn't believe it! Everything was so good too... Thank you Sweet Basils for a great night-we will forever remember your hospitality, good food, and cozy atmosphere:)

Explosive flavors and exquisite charm are the markers here. Recommend the clams and crab-cakes - both hit the top of the yummy meter! Fresh ingredients are the key here and a staff dedicated to making you feel at home. Oh and the ambiance of Cannon Beach doesn't hurt either ...

My husband and I had lunch here during our trip to the OR coast. Saw the reveiw and had to give a try. Yup, it was definitely it. Started with the Bok choy & mushroom soup (soo good), then I had a turkey basil wrap complemented with roasted red peppers and a special mayo spread, ever bite was so fresh. My husband had the crab sandwich, which he declare fresh and sweet. Add to 2 glasses of wine and we were set. No room for desert, but they must be good cause the locals were coming in and buying them to go. We got a chance to chat with the owner/chef John and learned that he has a vast culinary background and has owned several resturants. Sweet Basil is small and is tucked in the back of a group of shops. But it is worth seeking it out. If you want fresh good food and time to relax and enjoy your meal this is your place. Because its small not the best for small children, unless they have a developed palate.

We just finished an amazing dinner! we had various tapas and wine for dinner. There was some wonderful music to boot! we couldn't have had a better experience. The bacon wrapped dates were fantastic and the service we received from Shea was the best as well. We can't wait to return there. A wonderful way to spend the evening of our 10 year anniversary trip.

We were looking for vegetarian friendly food and wanted to get away from the fried food at every other restaurant. Sweet Basil's Cafe was a delightful find. The service was friendly. The food was served reasonably quickly. The food was well presented and excellent. We were pleased with every aspect of it. And the prices were moderate. You won't go wrong with this restaurant choice. I highly recommend it.

My cheese and apple sandwich was OK, the pulled pork was amazing (the reason for that extra star). Unfortunately the wait for everything was interminable. We waited for our server to arrive, we waited for our food, about 45 mins later we flagged down a different server (ours was nowhere to be seen) to ask about our food... Another wait only to find out they had lost our ticket. So we finally got our food, which was not worth the more than one hour wait, especially when the restaurant did not bother to apologize with a free dessert or anything, we paid our bill in full and will not be back.

If this type of restaurant were located in a city like Portland or Seattle, it wouldn't do well or survive. The food was good but hardly justified the high prices. The food tasted like something I could make at home and probably better and I'm no great chef. The meals weren't gourmet, and we even saw the cook grab frozen shrimp from the freezer area and walk it through the dinning area. We ordered 2 shrimp dishes, so we guessed that they were for us. The kitchen dominates the layout although the rest of it is well appointed and cozy. Gluten free, organic, and sustainable options could be better indicated on the menu. For food quality that matches the higher prices found here, I recommend Newman's 988. The next time we are at Cannon Beach, we won't be coming here.

I would love to tell you how delicious the food is, but we have been sitting here for almost an hour and no sign of it yet! I only ordered a wrap...how long does that take? I am grumpy, and hungry!

Stopped here for lunch on the way out of town with my wife, we both had seafood wraps-shrimp and crab and took a vegan brownie for the road. After tip, the total was just under $30. The food was well prepared and most importantly fresh. I must say that I really enjoyed the vinegar based coleslaw side that was obviously prepared in-house. Normally I don't like coleslaw, but this looked too good to pass up. The service was great and outdoor bench seating provided a nice touch.

This is a quaint little cafe tucked away in Cannon Beach. It's run by some very sweet people who instantly remind you of your grandparents house. We tried the salmon clam chowder and it was delicious. Perfectly seasoned, spot on texture, just the right amount of ingredients. Superb. We also tried the Crab Louie Wrap. It was just so fresh and flavorful. They are generous with the crab and the veggies are dressed beautifully. Every bite makes you say WOW. Overall I really loved the food and hospitality in this cafe. I'd surely recommend stopping here when you are in Cannon Beach. A tad bit pricey but I guess it's worth it.

Well, it's even better when the power stays on while we enjoy our evening. The Coconuts provided great live music as usual. The Coconuts provided great live music as usual. Ted was there and was a wizard with the wines. His pairings were right on the mark! Unfortunately, his choices were the best of Oregon so I doubt I'll find them back home... We had the Osso Buco and Crab Cakes and both were perfection. I never order Osso Buco and usually would not choose Polenta; and only did because a couple we were speaking with at the next table on Wednesday raved about it from a previous visit. They were right! The pork was so tender, it easily cut with a fork. The polenta and red sauce were the perfect compliment. My sweetheart had crab cakes to declare, "the best ever". And she has had a lot of experience with crab starting with Chesapeake Bay summers as a kid. Like a friend promised, it's all crab! And dessert? Though not on the menu, we had Caramel Corn that a regular brought in to share with the staff. It was out of this world!

While it may be one of the only places with vegan options in Cannon Beach, the food was blech. Also, the kitchen is in the middle of the restaurant and the whole place reeked. Somehow there is no ventilation so instead they propped the door open on a freezing evening to let the diners sit in not only a smelly, but freezing cold restaurant.

What a surprise. My wife and I have vacationed in Cannon Beach for years. We walked by this place many times as it's tucked around a corner. We found it thanks to Yelp and I'm so glad we did. All natural local food made perfectly. I haven't tasted food this good since our trip to Manhatten and before that New Orleans. Wow. Definitely split the Zorba with someone. A great blend of roasted vegetables, olive and artichoke. Also, make sure to eat something on the menu with crab. You'll be in heaven. I finished lunch not wanting to eat anything to chase it. Then I had the peach pie... The staff is friendly and I'll definitely come here again. 6 stars if I could.

Very disappointing experience. The server was very nice and we didn't have to wait long for a table, which was surprising considering they only have 4 tables and it was 7:00 on a Friday. My soup, while tasty, was luke warm and the Mojo Crab Salad was yuck. It cost $17.95 and had plenty of crab, but it was mixed with a sweet dressing I didn't care for. Ate mostly the greens, tomatoes, and cucumbers. The worst part was they tried to charge $17.50 for a very simple vegan panini because my daughter asked the chef to add a little field roast to it. Wished they had told us about the added charge before the bill came. The server met us half way but that little sandwich still set us back $12.50! Yikes. Not coming here again.

Sweet Basil's was where we chose to have our rehearsal dinner, a decision I don't regret at all. John, the chef and owner, was pleasant, easy to work with, and made a special vegan meal for our party of 12. The eggplant gravy and squash appetizer was especially delicious, and the vegan pot pie entree was filling and flavorful without being heavy. John came out and personally introduced himself, giving a bit of his history and thorough description of the upcoming meal. The wine was tasty and plentiful. Ted, the manager and one of the severs, was charming and liberal with the distribution of said wine-yay, Ted! The reason I'm giving four stars instead of five is that we thought there was a dessert included, and while Ted did bring out one brownie (my father was thrilled!) one brownie isn't quite enough for 12 people. This wasn't an issue for me: I'd had enough and had to cram into a wedding dress the next day, but my mother-in-law, who was gracious enough to foot the $500 tab, was disappointed. She also felt the other server (again, not Ted. Ted rocks!) was rude. I didn't notice this, either, but I feel obligated to mention it since my M-I-L was pretty upset about this particular server's attitude. Overall, though, the entire party LOVED Sweet Basil's, and I highly recommend this restaurant for good food, service, and wine.

We love this restaurant! Fresh, tasty tapas and entrees. Good wines, friendly service, live music on Friday nights. One of our favorites is their Osso Buco, and we also enjoy the Camerones & Artichokes. The Creole items look good but haven't tried them yet because we love the Osso Buco so much!

Very small, cozy restaurant. Service was ok. Our server was aloof and not very personable. The food was pretty good. I had the shrimp and banana chili sauce martini (interesting combination!), the shrimp with artichokes and the smoked salmon bruschetta (which was delicious!).

Sometimes you can't trust yelp for making a decision where to eat! The place is very tiny but somewhat cozy. Our hostess/waitress seemed very annoyed because she was working the entire restaurant and service was very slow and minimum. The food was just ok. Nothing phenomenal. We ordered the house red which was just ok. We ordered the famous pulled bbq and the crab Wrap. The pulled bbq was good but it wasn't amazing as everyone raves! The sides ( coleslaw and corn chips were not good at all) and when I asked to substitute it it was a very short "no!" Major let down based on yelp reviews.

My boyfriend suggested this place based on the great reviews. He said it was a really good vegetarian place. I enjoy having meat with my meals so I was reluctant at first but when I saw the menu, I was all for it! We were the first ones there for lunch as we walked in the moment that open sign was turned. Neither of us were too hungry so we decided to split an entree and soup. We had their crab and artichoke melt and one of their soup specials, clam chowder. The sandwich was absolutely wonderful. There was so much sweet and fresh meat in that sandwich, it was hard keeping it from spilling out. They didn't add too many ingredients to drown the natural flavor of the crab meat and there were just enough artichokes in there to add a wonderful flavor to the overall taste. The cup of soup was more like a bowl of soup at any other restaurant. It was nice and thick with a lot of clams, just the way I like it! The waiter was very nice and friendly but a little forgetful. As he greeted us and told us the food specials for the day, he forgot one of the soups and had to come back. Right after we ordered, he asked if we would like our soup first or wait for our melt to come out? We asked for the soup first. The melt came out and we were half way done when he came to check on us. We said it was wonderful but wanted to know if we could have our soup. He was very apologetic about it and promptly brought our soup. If I could give half stars, this would have been 4.5 stars as the waiter still would have gotten a half star from me for being so pleasant.

Had a lovely time chatting with the nice bartender on a slow night Sunday night. Split a bowl of clam chowder which was amazing - not overly rich or goopy, just full of perfectly fresh and sweet clams. Good local wine selections by the glass too. Only regret was to be in the area on a slow night.

Cute, casual atmosphere. At first, I thought the service was a little flaky, but then I realized that they're just laid-back people but care about their customers. Everything brought to the table was fresh. Although we added extra salt and pepper to everything, I'd rather do that to good, fresh ingredients than bad ones. The Yucatan shrimp salad was fresh and nice. Good dressing. The bread (and other ingredients) for the eggplant panini were delicious. The real treat was wine. After having a nice bottle of Oregon rosé, we moved over to the wine bar. Ted, the manager, was so willing to share pours of many wines while various wine distributors visited. Really fun experience!

Great food, attentive wait staff, comfortable booths, outside tables, organic/sustainable, wine. Food was hot. Cole slaw side with lunch was unfortunate (why cole slaw?). Contrary to what the visitor booth staff will tell you, there is NOT a long wait time for your food to arrive.

Why do we go to the Oregon Coast? Yes, the ocean scenes are mind boggling. Yes, the hiking, surfing and paragliding are stunning. What's missing? Dining that's not (usually crappy) fish and chips or burgers made from freezer to fryer. Or pretentious joints that charge super dollars for substandard grub. I can't understand it. In a place that has an abundance of succulent seafood, places from Astoria to Yahats continue to serve fried this and fried that. I for one, would like to have the occasional fish and chips as an option, not a staple. What to do? Simple. When in Cannon Beach go to Sweet Basil's. The menu has nothing that looks like it will knock you out: Po boys, Wraps, Salads. What will knock you out is the knowledge of the cook/owner about quality ingredients and well sourced products. Tonight I had a crab roll. For those of you that know what a good, North Eastern "lobsta roll" is, there's no disappointment. The bread was righteously soft, the locally sourced crab wasn't dripping with mayo (meaning you could taste it) and it squished up perfectly when held. Yum, f^&&ing yum. I hate cole slaw. I loved SB's cole slaw. Crunchy, a little sweet with celery seed and goodness. My dining partner had the "Crab Stuffed Portobello Surprise". The surprise is that the flavors of all the listed ingredients can be tasted and hold their own. Score another killer version of something that doesn't have menu eye appeal but excels from ordinary to exquisite by the talent of the chef and the right makings. The starter was a split house salad with roasted tomato dressing. In addition to the normal greens, it included a lot of fashionable kitchen sink items: pumpkin seeds, dried cranberries, cucumbers, carrots, green peppers (and BOY do I hate green peppers in a salad!). Normally, I detest this type of hodge-podge. I'll give SB a double thumbs up on this one: it was awesome. All the ingredients were perfectly cut and stood out. Do yourself and the owner a favor: eat here.

No wonder this place get so many good reviews. It's AWESOME! The Javanese curry is superb, also the Crab and artichoke melt is out of this world! Fresh, Local, Organic and well prepared by a happy chef that knows what he's doing! A++! Oh and the price is EXTREMELY reasonable, especially compared to a lot of restaurants close by.

On our first trip with our new baby, we came here after looking up restaurants in Cannon Beach. It was the worst food/service I have ever had. Anywhere. I am not sure how everyone else had such a great experience... We ordered a glass of wine and it took about half an hour just to get that. My husband ordered some kind of sausage that came out cold with a disgusting sauce. After waiting another twenty or so minutes for my meal, we just left. I have never walked out of a place. The mood in the place was so down, maybe someone had died? That is seriously all I can think of. It was just bad. We added up from the menu what our food would cost and put the cash down and left. The server was clearly ignoring us and we are really nice, understanding people. I am a server myself and still cannot figure out why it was so bad. This was such a disappointment to say the least.

My boyfriend and I found Sweet Basil's Cafe here on Yelp, and after reading the reviews and more about the cafe itself (Cajun cooking plus fresh seafood with a northwestern twist? Sign us up!) we decided to try it out on our recent trip to the beach. WOW! It was a little tricky to find, tucked back in a little courtyard, but it was worth the short search. The decor looked like it had been thrown together that day, but there was some nice jazz on the stereo. We started our order with their natural sodas--he got root beer, I got ginger ale--which were delicious and low-cal. He ordered the "Pulled Pork Po' Boy Sandwich", which, while not actually a po' boy, was delicious! It came with their own cole slaw and some organic corn chips. The sauce was flavorful, the sandwich hot, and they packed the pork onto it so we got plenty for our buck! The pork was tender and they didn't drown it with the sauce, which I loved. The cole slaw was great, too! I do not like cole slaw, and I actually stole a few bites of his. He ate every single bite of this delicious lunch! I order the Crab and Artichoke Melt, and it was pure poetry on a plate. Delicate, fresh crab meat with a wonderful blend of cheeses and artichokes melted onto a slice of crunchy, soft wheat bread of some kind. It came with some mixed greens and a mild dressing. I was so impressed by the way the taste of the crab--a generally mild flavor--was allowed to come through and blend with the other flavors instead of being overwhelmed. Alright, I guess I have been raving awhile about the food here, but you've GOT to try it! If you're in Cannon Beach looking for a quiet, out-of-the-way spot to have a moderately priced delicious lunch, Sweet Basil's is the place!

It is so nice to go to the beach and get tasty, organic, healthy food! To make it even better, they were able to accomodate my son's gluten free diet. He got to eat a regular meal, just like his brother, because they are thoughtful enough to provide gluten free bread and sides! This will be our new stand by any time we are at Cannon Beach.

What a find Sweet Basil's Cafe is! The Crab & Artichoke Melt was fantastic - chunks of real crab on really hearty wheat bread. The Zorba wrap was also delicious with meaty red and yellow peppers filling out the zesty hummus and feta filled wrap. We've been coming to Cannon Beach for years and I can't believe this is our first visit - this place is a hidden treasure. Friendly, relaxed service, tasty local ingredients and a very sweet vibe!

Good for lunch or to grab some stuff to take on a picnic/hike along the coast. Sandwiches (we had the Chicken Salad and the Stacker) were fresh and loaded with all that good healthy stuff. We also ordered the chocolate banana bread pudding which ended up being our snack on the plane ride home the next day - Delish!

Not a big or fancy place, but very very friendly to dogs. They had a few picnic tables on the grass with umbrellas, but the cloth-cushioned booth outdoor seating on the outer deck was what I liked best. I completely covered the bench cushions with my freshly-laundered doggie blankets so that my dogs could sit next to me, and they were cool with that. They even came by with treats for my dogs. We had the apple and cheddar panini which was great, and I had some kind of crab salad which was really tasty. There were plenty of large chunks of crabs and a zesty/ tangy dressing. I ordered additional tofu to be added to my salad, and it seemed raw, but it's ok. We had the chocolate-banana bread pudding, and it was also very tasty. Of course, what I really dream of is a sushi place right on the beach serving pink champagne or pink sake where I can take my puppies, but that will never happen, so this is good. I'm happy!

We walked around Cannon Beach searching for something decent for lunch and nearly settled for pizza or veggie burgers but luckily kept on looking. And finally we happened to come across this little cafe. They have a much more diverse, and vegetarian friendly menu compared to other lunch spots. And a pleasant mom and pop atmosphere with cheerful service. And the food was really good! I had the tofu "egg" salad, which was perfectly seasoned and filled with fresh veggies. And all the sandwiches come with tortilla chips and homemade cole slaw on the side. Apparently they support local farms and have sustainably harvested organics and whatnot, but more importantly they make really good food and cater to lots of different appetites. I'd highly recommend them if you're looking for lunch in Cannon Beach, or a casual dinner.

The pulled pork po boy is one of the greatest things I have ever eaten. It's wonderful to have the food cooked to order, fresh and wonderful tasting. Really great place to eat

I love this place! We only ate here because Cranky Sue's turned us away (I'll write that story in a review of Cranky Sue's.) Organic, vegan & vegetarian-friendly food, plus plenty of carnivorous choices for the rest of the family. The serivce was friendly and attentive (very "mom & pop" atmosphere), and the prices were good. I had the Zorba Wrap, which was delicious, and others at the table raved about the tuna salad. It's a very dog-friendly restaurant (normal for Oregon), in fact, we were the only outdoor table without a dog! When I went inside to pay the bill, I noticed a huge box of dog biscuits :)

We celebrated our anniversary here last week. We were greeted enthusiastically, and told to sit anywhere. We chose a booth in the bar. To our delight, there was a guitar player/singer performing, which added a bit of charm we didn't expect. Our choice for dinner was to try several small plates, and that was a lot of fun and everything was very good. The flavors are fresh and spices are just right. We weren't sure about a wine choice, so the barkeep brought two bottles over, and poured tastes of each for us to try. Everyone was extremely friendly and casual, but service was a little on the slow side. If you are in a hurry, you may want to try another place, but we enjoyed the experience and we were not in any rush to finish. It was fun to people watch and we liked the music which was a mix of oldies with a few more current pieces thrown in. At one point, we were all singing along with the music. There was toe tapping. Fun evening. We didn't try the dessert, but our server brought us glasses of port to celebrate our anniversary. We will definitely return.

The service is wonderful and the food is delicious! I had the pulled pork sliders. This little cafe is unique and offers lighter more creative dishes than your typical fish and chips restaurant or steak house. My wife loved the crab stuffed portebelo and we both enjoyed our drinks and tapas.

This place is a godsend! Amazing vegetarian and vegan food (they have non vegan and vegetarian food too in case that concerns you) served in a comfortable and welcoming restaurant tucked away on Hemlock Street in Cannon Beach. Being from Portland, Oregon I truly understand how increasingly difficult it is to find a place that serves vegan and vegetarian food that isn't packed full of elitist and/or hippie bullshit. This cozy cafe is genuinely concerned with the quality and nutritional value of what they are serving to their customers, and most importantly it taste amazing! During my visit I ordered the Big Stacker, which possibly has every ingredient a sandwich should contain, but I only recommend it if you've been running up and down the coast all day and could digest a sea lion. Not only is the food made with local products of excellent quality, the presentation and flavor balance have really been treated with the utmost care. I know from experience how disappointing it is to go to a restaurant that advertises it's use of the best local and organic ingredients, only to find out in the end that the food is put together clumsily and with total disregard for your taste buds. Sweet Basil's Cafe is one of the best restaurants in Cannon Beach, if not one of the best along the whole Oregon coast. This is artisan cooking at it's best.

Sweet basils cafe. The food and service was excellent. Got a table for two inside near the kitchen and warmth, it was chilly out. There is a 7 piece band cramped in a corner playing classical and groovy tunes. Soft music. Perfect. A sax, trumpet, guitar, bass, mild percussion, man and woman singing: a symphony in my ears. Music every night. Order the vegan étouffée. They are so accommodating here. Multiple dishes can be made for me. My dish was pleasantly spicy and prepared well. So much flavor and taste. This chef definitely knows what he is doing. Also, the waitress was super friendly and kind even though we look rough and are young. The kitchen is an open concept. The dining room is elegant yet comfortable. Ask for a recommendation on wine paring. Get a glass of 14$ Pinot noir. Worth it. Jammy and goes well with my spicy dish. I highly recommend this place to anyone. Ask for Cynthia, she was incredible.

What a great place we came upon after figuring out what to eat. The place to crab a quick bite and some vino! My crawfish dish was delicious. Hubs love his pork shank dish and salmon chowder with some apple cider. Yes and I ordered the Argentinean Malbec glass of wine and sulami/charcuterie plate. The server was pleasant and all around the place was very satisfying. We would come back because its that great! Give it a try even if its just to drop by for a glass of wine! There is outside seating and its lovely.

When you visit Cannon Beach, you expect the food to match the spectacular locale. With Sweet Basil's Cafe, you will hit the mark. The service is top notch (which is opposite to what some reviewers have said). My second time here, the server poured me a "robust" red, which was decidedly off. They took it away with a smile and poured me an alternative that was on point-no charge. My first visit, I had the crab cakes. They were delightfully fluffy so much so that I had to hold them down with my fork lest they float off the plate. That's not to say they weren't filled with crab and flavorful seasoning, either. Maybe the best I've ever eaten. Tonight I had the seafood jambalaya, which had just the right amount of spice, rice and seafood. Garnished with scallions, this was just about a perfect dish. What I really liked about this was the rice was part of the sauce. It wasn't just a lump under the jambalaya. The chef prepares most dishes a la minute in an extremely small kitchen, so don't come expecting fast and quick. These meals are prepared with care and it tastes like it. They also accommodate vegetarian diets.

We ate here on our last day in Cannon Beach. Food was crisp, fresh and flavorful: apple salad and crab wrap. Service was a little slow, but we ate outdoors on their porch: a much more restful space than the places along the main drag. Besides, wisely they addressed the issue right on the front page of their menu! Smart; and very goid light fare.

Very good for vegetarians. I got the eggplant sandwich. The eggplant is juicy tender full of flavor. My husband got a pulled pork sandwich, a bit too sweet for a Hongkonger. But I guess Americans love sweet pork.

What a lovely find! I love this little, cozy cafe and all it's charm! We went to watch the sunset on Cannon Beach and stayed until it got dark. By then it was nearly 9pm and we were now looking for dinner. We contemplating driving back to Portland and hitting up one of the restaurants but that would require us to wait even longer to eat. This was one of the few places that was opened late that Yelp steered us towards. It was a Saturday night so they have a live jazz band performing - what an added treat. We were seated in the other room but can see the band from the wall openings. The food is cajun-creole inspired. We browsed the menu and right away I found pork osso buco and it had me sold. My cousin decided on the seafood jambalaya. The food took a while to come but we were able to see the chef behind the counter cooking our food while we waited. The pork osso bucco was so tender and flavorful. It was so good! I wanted to go ham on it but stopped myself because I can see the couple at the table next to us eyeing it from the corner of my eye and didn't want to embarrass myself. LOL. My cousin loved her jambalaya. It came packed with seafood! The portion was huge - we asked for them to pack up our other half to go. We planned on eating more of it when we got back to our hotel but when we got back we were still full and couldn't stomach any more food. Unfortunately, our room did not have a fridge or microwave so we ended up having to toss it out. :(

The vegetarian reuben tasted like sauerkraut on bread, and my wife's "sweet basil crab roll" was just a sub with crab and mayo. It didn't stay together well and also didn't have much taste. Besides that, the coleslaw was very good and the salmon clam chowder was a homerun. The service was not only slow, but just not good. Fortunately the wait for food was actually not bad at all. We ate and stared at an unbussed table for a half hour. The waitress walked past our table a few times after we were done eating. We finally walked up to the register after 15 minutes and got our bill. I'm thinking our waitress is one of the owners. She wasn't rude, but wasn't very personable at all. I recommend finding someone who has waited takes before and using spice in the food.

Evening started out w/ excellent service from Josh/Topher (inside joke). Highly recommend coming early. A few of the dishes were sold out after an hour of opening. The part before us ordered the last of the osso bucco pork, which looked delicious. Started w/ bacon wrapped dates w/ manchego, a salumi and olive platter. All was excellent, especially the bacon wrapped dates. For entree I had the seafood jambalaya. It was wonderful and plentiful. Quality ingredients. Veggies were not soggy and just the right amount of kick where you can enjoy your food still. House salad was great. A wonderful blend of veggies including carrots, sunflower seed, zucchini, celery, bell peppers and alot more. Love the food and the service. Wouldve given 5 stars but they were out of the dish we came to try.

Solid 3.5 for me. Food was alright. My shrimp roll missed the mark - plenty of shrimp, which was awesome, but nothing about it was really outstanding and I felt like I could've made the sandwich myself. My sister's pulled pork grilled cheese, on the other hand, was fantastic - stuffed with plenty of soft pork, without the gooey cheese being too overwhelming. I stared longingly at her sandwich as I ate my own. Service was pretty nice though, and Josh is a great waiter. We forgot our hat after our meal and he also came running after us to return it. Other notes: - The cafe bills itself as natural, wild, and organic, e.g. the herbs used in the food are grown by the chef himself. - Decor is super homey, loved that part! When you walk in you feel like your grandparents just opened up their kitchen to everyone. - Keep in mind that the food will take a little longer than at most places because the small team does everything themselves. - Sweet Basil's and the wine bar next door are owned by the same people, so there's additional seating in the adjacent room.

Great food, vibe, and service. We ordered the crawfish étouffée and the seafood gumbo, which were pretty similar, but the étouffée was much more expensive... Still, they both tasted great! Peach pie for dessert was delicious, as well. We even came back the next day for a lunch of salmon and clam chowder and the veggie melt. Both were great, but I have to say I preferred the chowder. Overall a great experience.

First of all, the food we had was DELICIOUS. It was very well made, the menu was put together very well, obviously by an experienced chef. We had also read the disclaimer about the wait time on the food coming out and we were ok with the wait. We were a group of four with a baby and a dog. Now, when we met the hostess waiting to be seated, we offered to take a dirty table(it wasn't that dusty) since it was explained to us that they weren't expecting people to be sitting outside in February (understandable, I thought maybe then they would have the chairs stacked so no one can seat there). However, I thought we were met with a scowl(my husband said I probably imagined it, so I let it go) after we sat down for about 5 min and we were accidentally being ignored because of the crowd. So I went in and the waitress saw me and offered me menus since we hadn't gotten them. (That's fine, I understand how busy a person can be when the restaurant seemed short handed) Then after a while, we sat there looked at the menu, I saw the same waitress again. I asked "We are ready to order now, or should we wait to order?" she gave me a truly not so nice smile and said "you need to wait". From then on, the atmosphere seemed off. We weren't in a hurry so we were ok with waiting. But it felt like we weren't being treated as nicely as other customers. We ordered two stuff Portobello mushrooms, a cubano and a shrimp roll. My goodness, the food was amazing. Next time when we visit Canon Beach, I would be more inclined to visit again if the wait staff was more friendlier. Otherwise, I probably will label it as one of these places that you have to visit at least once for the food, because its definitely a delicious a hole in the wall.

I'm giving Sweet Basil's 3 stars instead of 5 stars for one reason: Sanitation. I love everything else about this place, the food is excellent, their service is great, they value organic food and they have lots of vegan options. On our last visit to Cannon Beach, we went their twice. We sat inside and there were lots of flies all over the place. I used the restroom which was out of paper towels. Now for the shocker - when we went home I discovered that you can look up the Department of Health food inspections for any restaurant in Cannon Beach. Sweet Basil had one of the lowest scores in the county with a score of 71 which is nearly failing (anything below 70 fails). In contrast McDonalds and Taco Bell both received a score of 100, which tells me you have to have some serious violations to get that low of a score. I will be checking this site again on our next trip to make sure it improves before going to Sweet Basil's again.

Food: Got the pork shank osso buco, absolutely wonderful. All of the flavors working together had me saying how great it was after nearly every bite. Haven't had food this good in quite a while. My girlfriend got the chicken tchoupitoulas, I only had one bite of that deliciousness, but she was raving about it just as much as I was bragging about my meal. Atmosphere: There was a single musician playing the whole time we were eating. Played both the guitar and banjo and I have to say that added quite the ambiance. Very warm feeling establishment (we sat on the wine side, 21+) Service: Our waitress was wonderful, had a great attitude and sense of humor. Didn't have to wait for anything more than we should've, the food takes a little bit of time to be made but only because they have two kitchen staff creating works of beauty. Price: My dish was $23.50 and her's was somewhere around $17/$18. Two glasses of the house red wine totaled $16. Was worth every penny. I highly recommend this place and I'm pretty sure we will be visiting again soon enough.

It's great if you want to sit at an uncomfortable table with super loud and a below average live band playing, while eating barely warmed and bland food. If not then skip it. We had cold and mushy Bison and Bacon Meatballs and the Camarones and Artichoke Hearts which we took one bite of, asked for the check and headed on down the road.

Great food. Nice to have several vegetarian choices. They get busy and aren't fast so don't go there with hungry kids or in a hurry. Also the one bathroom is in the storage closet area and you sit outside and drink water out of plastic cups. So, with the comments so far, why 4 stars? Because the food is really really good. There were 5 adults and 2 kids. My vegetarian gumbo was delicious! There were kids meals at an affordable price. Great wine selection too.

I have never reviewed a restaurant before but had the most bizarre, unnerving experience here today. I was so excited about a healthy, organic, family-owned restaurant with great reviews! The place was mostly empty. We were greeted with a scowl, led to our table, and waited. And waited. After 30 minutes of waiting, I thought maybe we were supposed to order at the register. I went to ask and was sent back to my table with a condescending frown from the hostess. We finally got water, and - after an additional 20 minutes of waiting and another respectful visit to the register - placed our order. I asked to substitute a side salad with my sandwich instead of chips, and the waitress seemed irritated at my request and told me they don't make substitutions. That's completely understandable, but she seemed angry that I even asked. When our food finally arrived, they messed up our order. The menu said the veggie wrap came on whole wheat, but it came with a spinach wrap. When I politely inquired about the mix-up, the waitress seemed upset and said, "Well, evidently this is all they had." My friend is allergic to corn and requested no chips, but a pile of stale corn chips accompanied her soggy sandwich. When we were ready to pay, we went to the register but were sent back to our table where we waited an additional 20 minutes. She seemed upset when I came to the register a second time. I very respectfully told her that we waited an hour before anyone took our order, but she glared and me and didn't apologize. I genuinely believe that people do the best they can and give everyone the benefit of the doubt, but I am still so confused! I have never had such awful service. Perhaps they were having an off-day, but I felt disrespected, unwanted, uncomfortable, and unwelcome the entire time. So strange!

Went there yesterday, should have listened to my instincts and left. Food is OK, service is horrible. We were standing in the door to get in, and an old woman basically pushed me out of the way. Thought it was a rude customer, but it ended up being a grumpy server. We were seated and 10 mins later, we still didn't have menus. My wife had to get up and get her own menus. They finally took our orders, and we all asked for water. It's a 95 degree day, and after 10 mins, there was still no water on our tables. We had to ask again. Read the back of their menus, and they basically said that if you're in a hurry, come back again, because they prepare everything fresh which could take longer. It takes all but 5 seconds to pour water. Food came out 30 mins after we ordered, which was expected, but at this point I was ready to leave. I think the problem was that they might have been understaffed and had too many empty tables. If that is the case, don't keep seating customers! I won't go back again.

Awesome food. Their crab melt was so good and melty, using real crab. The apple chicken salad also rocked. Everything was so fresh and tasty. The best was the clam and salmon clam chowder, best chowder I ever had. Will definitely go back again!

Tucked away Off the Main Street in Cannon Beach, adorable small restaurant. Outdoor seating was wonderful on a warm summer day. Friendly waitress with great recommendations. Plenty of gluten free and veggie options. Ordered the crab stuffed portobello and it was amazing. Tons of crab and a delicious mix of flavors. Worth a trip to the beach.

Delicious! Had the crawfish etouffe, succulent and tasty. The Shrimp Creole had the prefect kick. I'm not usually a fan of live music unless it's a group I've sought out, but the performers that night were absolutely charming. Basil's really brings something unique to Cannon Beach. My friend's only complaint was the white wine could have been more cold- but the server was very thoughtful and supplied a chilled glass. On my next trip to OR coast it will be my first stop.

What a delightful place! When we mentioned forest fire smell, server said chef had been smoking pork belly, not on menu, appetizer with polenta. She didn't mention the roux on top: sensational. The hot tomato soup du hour was good; the bacon-wrapped dates perfect. The seafood jambalaya really flavorful, lots of zing, all fish not overcooked, barely any rice, just plenty of varied seafood. The chocolate pecan Pie a la mode: sigh. Very special bottle and glass wine list. Attentive service. Band in wine bar was very good and thoroughly enjoyable.

This is your perfect seaside, mom and pop restaraunt experience. There is vintage furniture and the (self proclaimed) slow laid back service, a birdfeeder out back attracting the local bluebirds. Its small and cozy, so get here early if you want a seat. Menu has alot of good seafood options, with rotating daily soups. Coconut curry soup was a little too much of a kick, while I was very jealous of the boyfriend's delicious and chunky clam chowder. We both ended up ordering some sort of crab mixture, his on a mushroom while mine was on a roll. It was mixed with mayonaise (I think), and therefore a bit heavy to finish. So I didn't have room to finish the sides, the salad was fresh but the chips were seemed kind of stale anyways.

From the moment I walked in with my husband and grandmother, every employee treated for me like I was in their way. They didn't greet us nor did they say anything nice when they came to take our order. The food was mediocre and the chips were stale. They need some definite help with customer service. I recommend against going to this place.

The girlfriend and I made a romantic getaway trip to Cannon Beach this weekend and we wanted to find a restaurant that would represent both the seafood-inspired location (being the Oregon coast), and somewhere that was unique, had a nice atmosphere, and good for a younger couple looking to enjoy a nice meal overall. I'm pleased to say that all of the above were met at Sweet Basil's Cafe, and I'm so happy that we selected it for our dinner. To start, we arrived around 6:30pm to find a very busy restaurant and we huddled in the doorway, trying to avoid the cold, blustery winter that the coast was experiencing this weekend. We were immediately greeted by a friendly woman who was honest about the wait time (about 15-20 minutes), but we very happy to put our name down so we'd be seated next. We agreed and looked at a few shops nearby before returning. We returned at 15 minutes exactly - I'm kind of OCD when it comes to time - and we were immediately offered a place as promised. We opted to sit in the wine bar area as there was a Portland-based couple playing very lovely folk music and the ambiance was very inviting. We settled in and were warmly greeted by our obviously very busy server, who apologized that she was a bit busy tonight, but started us off with water and the menus, and would return shortly. We reviewed the menus, enjoyed the music, and took in the very inviting atmosphere of the restaurant. The girlfriend and I notice the disclosure on the front of the menu, stating that this restaurant was based on a quality, food-oriented ideal, and that time sensitivity was not something to have here - we both chuckled and appreciated the honesty. Our server having returned, we placed our order - we selected to split the Wild Tiger Prawn Martini with Banana Chili Salsa, with the girlfriend having the Shrimp Creole, and I having the Dungeness Crab Stuffed Portobello. Being a bit of a wine fan, I asked our server what wine she could recommend to go with my plate. She pondered it thoughtfully, and made a recommendation that she felt would go perfectly with that dish. The appetizer (the Wild Tiger Prawns) arrived within about 15 minutes and was very, very interesting. Five large prawns adorned a martini glass, with the Banana Chili Salsa in the center. The girlfriend and I were quite intrigued that the salsa actually had sliced of bananas mixed with a sweet and slightly spicy chili sauce. We both were extremely impressed with the flavors of the appetizer and how they went together perfectly. I never would have thought of bananas mixing well with a chili sauce... but it was divine. Within about 15 minutes of the appetizer arriving, the main courses arrived. The Shrimp Creole was a gumbo-like stew of sorts, and the girlfriend was very pleased with it - she said it was a bit on the spicier side, but that it was still very good. Disclosure: the girlfriend can't handle much spiciness at all, so it wasn't overtly spicy. My course, the Dungeness Crab Stuffed Portobello came with a simple yet delicious spinach salad with a strong yet enjoyable balsamic dressing. The main attraction - the crab and mushroom - was simply amazing. The portobello was cooked to perfection, without being too 'mushroomy' and not being rubbery - it went terrifically with the Dungeness crab that was placed atop it. All in all, this is definitely one of the most memorable and unique restaurants I have been to in Oregon, and fully recommend it. Again, if you're time sensitive, this isn't the place, and the owner will fully agree with you. However, if you're looking for a small coastal restaurant, with a wonderful atmosphere, warm service, and some of the most amazing pairings of food, Sweet Basil's Cafe is indeed the place for that. Five stars very well earned!

I was looking forward to a nice meal. After ordering a portobello dish recommended by the waiter He came back approximately 45 minutes later to tell me they had no portobellos. It took 45 minutes...to realize they did not have portobellos. His excuse was they are a small restaurant. I am afraid they are going to get smaller and smaller with this type of service. I paid for my wine and left. I am not planning to go back again. Their attitude is extremely unprofessional.

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the entire meal here tonight. We got nervous at the beginning when they had no hard drinks and the menu had a disclaimer about it not being a fast process. The food and service were exceptional, the flavors were impossible to discern. There was a creole aspect, but not too spicy. I would place this in the top 5% of all time for sure. Worth the money and the time

My wife and got some great sandwiches. The pulled pork was among the best I've ever had and the bread was fresh and flaky. My favorite eating spot in Cannon Beach.

Mediocre at best. We had the crab artichoke melt, tuna melt, and tuna salad. All were just okay although they took a lot of time (1.25 hours) trying make them look pretty. The single server on a holiday weekend with a completely full house was terrible! Skipping this spot next year for sure!

Bacon wrapped dates were great. Not greasy but a nice salty and sweet mix! The Osso Bucco was to die for! Perfect!!

Food and drinks were delicious. Service was great. Music was even better. We had a great time at Sweet Basils. Come prepared to wait because the restaurant is small, but the wait is worth it.

Just had a super rude experience here. Hubby and I stopped for some dessert, wine and live music. The manager asked if we'd like a menu and I said not yet... he came back literally less than five minutes later and asked us to leave because the music was for patrons only! I said we will take a menu just not yet and he just looked at us. The place had about 10 empty tables so it's not like they needed our table. Unbelievably rude and they not only lost us as customers I will be sure to tell everyone I know to not visit this place.

Wow. The owner just responded to my review. All I can think of to say is...WOW! He insulted me for pointing out the truth. He is so incredibly unprofessional. I am stunned. First off, he misrepresented and misquoted what I originally said. Second, I used/use proper adjectives to accurately describe to my fellow yelpers who I was dealing with and to give an honest review to reflect my experiences. In his response, he mentioned they had to close early because they ran out of multiple items. Somehow he thinks admitting they were ill-prepared defends his business practice. Further, in my review, I never mentioned which day we were there so unless they run out of items often, he is lying & making excuses. Finally, it is just plain mind-boggling to me that he insults people for having a bad experience at his restaurant. I'm so happy we didn't get to eat there. I would not want to give any business to such horrible people. I just read other responses the owner has given to negative reviews. Apparently he loves to insult people who have had negative experiences at his restaurant.

I was there at lunch. Should have read the Yelp reviews first. The food was fine. The waiter and waitress were rude, giving the appearance of being terribly busy and possibly wishing we weren't there. Service was slow which I didn't mind as we had good food. The people at next table left as no one came back to take their order.

Wow- what a cute place, the wine bar & live music is so relaxing & fun...they offer vegan substitutes... However, brown gravy, one small scoop of white rice and sliced tofu for $19.00???!! Outrageous!! No bread or salad with it...disappointing. Now I need to go find something else to eat somewhere else to soak up this wine! Probably better for meat eaters, but portions are small for the $ & quality regardless.

Gotta love a place that says on the menu that you should know where your food is from. Everything was fresh and creatively put together. We sat outside with our dog and enjoyed the garden area. Our server brought out a big biscuit for our dog so she could enjoy lunch, too. The house wine was delicious, clearly they know their wine, and while the staff are few- they mention on the menu that you may have to wait a bit- it's totally worth it. We enjoyed a leisurely lunch in a lovely spot and will definitely go back.

This was one of our top two favorites in Cannon Beach (Stephanie Hotel being the other) My wife enjoyed the healthy vegan and organic choices. The dishes were creative and tasty. They do not skimp on the portion size either. I consider this place to be a great value. Only reason it's not a five star place is that it's a bit 'cozy'...which certainly adds to the charm, but it does feel a bit cramped. The food is good enough that I expect that they'll do well enough to be able to move to a bigger location in the years to come. We look forward to a return trip our next time in CB.

Bison and Bacon Meatballs: everything that is hearty and meaty, doused in a saucy trilogy. Now that I got your attention with those balls, allow me to introduce Sweet Basil's Cafe: a natural, organic, wild and soon to be certified gluten free restaurant on the Oregon Coast. What's even more interesting is they have a tapas thing going on and Chef John Sowa definitely has a Creole thing going on. Just off the main drag in Cannon Beach, this restaurant is unassuming, unpretentious and dainty. There is a bar connected that often plays live music. Justin and I showed up late (late for Oregon Coast hours, around 8:45) and were welcomed without being guilt tripped for our past-curfew tendencies. We tasted a few wines that night, thanks to our gracious wine server, Ted. We enjoyed the two pictured above immensely. Chemistry White Wine - a bright, fruity blend from the Willamette Valley. However, the La Velle Chardonnay from Columbia Valley was the star of the night. One of the best stainless steel chardonnays I've ever tasted: stone fruits on the nose, lots of mineral, and a refreshing finish. I will buy a case of this. I had to order the Dungeness Crab Stuffed Portobello, a massive portobello, topped with a slice of organic tomato, then mounded with Dungeness Crab, parmesan, mayonnaise (yes, mayo!) finished with provolone cheese. The combination was sweet, earthy and delightfully rich. The Chicken Tchoupitoulas Justin ordered was something of a mystery. A New Orleans style dish involving pan seared chicken breast topped with a creamy, tarragon flecked Béarnaise sauce, accompanied by pan roasted potatoes and squash. Neither of us were blown away by this dish but it was still tasty due to the high quality ingredients involved. Justin also ordered the Sweet Basil's Plentiful House Salad consisting of organic greens, cabbage, tomatoes, cucumbers and sunflower seeds. Would we return? Definitely if were living la vida gluten free and probably, if not for a glass of wine and round of bacon wrapped dates and/or something with crab

We were delighted to find Sweet Basil's a couple of years ago on an anniversary trip to Cannon Beach. That first night we were practically the only people there on a weekday evening. We felt we were treated like royalty. My husband and I ordered the same dish though he requested his be vegan. Both were amazing! And the wine suggestion from our server was perfect. We have come back every year since either for dinner or for lunch or both! It is so nice to be able to choose vegan options right from the menu and not have to explain ourselves and our needs. We don't mind the slower service, we arrive ready to take our time. And when the weather is amenable, we sit outside with our dog and feel quite welcome to do so.

I really enjoyed my experience here. Friendly, local, tasty. I had the salad with a tomato dressing and the lentil bean soup. Both were tasty and fresh. My companion had the chicken pot pie and it looked outstanding. He loved the crust. Recommended for sure!

This time I went for the ham & cheese panini; a safe choice. Himself had the chicken salad sand and we split the soup of the day, a curry veggie thing. The soup was pretty good, though the veggies were a little...firm. My sandwich included a jalapeño sweet jam, as described, though only the sweet came through. SO thought that it seemed like the chicken salad ingredients just got put together and did not have a chance for the flavors to marry. OK, maybe so. Ultimately, I give Sweet Basil an A for creativity C- for execution this time and last time. Consistency is good, isn't it?. Maybe I am just predisposed to not care for a restaurant that makes big issues about organic foodstuffs and healthy dining. I always feel such places are lecturing me. I go out to eat to enjoy, I save the guilt for home cooking when I lash my soups with heavy cream. Service was pretty potty this time. I didn't mention it last time, but since it happened again this time, I will let loose. I totally love the fact that the staff all sneak out the back behind the restaurant to smoke between duties. You see these things when you eat out in the garden. That makes me feel a little better about hating the organic/healthy thing they have going...

Excellent! Crab-stuffed portobello and portobello panini had just the right spice and oil- not too heavy, not too light. The honey almond cake (GF) was also perfectly concocted. A little hard to find but worth it.

The service was very slow, but they had only two girls working and they were full. The food was amazing though. I can't stress that enough. Both of our dishes were finger licking good, and the pie was had was to die for. It's also nice because it's off the beaten path a bit so it's as hectic as some of the other places. They have nice outdoor seating as well so you can relax under a tree in the shade. Fantastic place.

Really enjoyed our meal here, interesting varied menu and there was an excellent guitarist accompanying dinner. Our meal was wonderful (I had the Cajun salmon/crawfish special, K had bison meatballs and salmon bruschetta), special shout out to the marionberry pie!!!

Went here on vacation a couple weeks ago and was not that impressed. Our appetizer had an unexpected surprise in it and we had to return it. After that it seemed like the meal was ruined. One of our 2 waitresses did offer us free drinks or desert to compensate. So we chose desert and thought it was very professional and nice. We loved that first waitress. Unfortunately, the second waitress was the problem. She came over 3 times to tell us story's about the unexpected surprise in our food and really ruined a nice meal for my family. Then she proceeded to charge us for what the other waitress said she would give us for free. We were not overly impressed with the food for the price either, especially the entrees and desert.

This restaurant was good, not great. I liked the quaint feel of the place and enjoyed being able to see into the kitchen and watch a little bit of their process. The server, who I'm assuming is the wife of the chef, was very friendly and pleasant. The prices are reasonable and everything we had was tasty. I like the premise of the healthy food as its always nice to have healthier options available. I ordered the crap wrap, which was slightly more expensive than the average menu item, but appropriately so as I definitely got my fare share of fresh crab meat. Everything in the wrap was well proportioned, from the crab to the veggies to the sauce..nothing was overpowering and it was very balanced. The coleslaw they serve with their meals is basic. Not the best I have ever had but not bad. I liked their choice of the corn chips instead of potato chips...not greasy, simple but tasty. My girlfriend had the pulled pork po-boy. This sandwich was very yummy (as pulled pork always is) and for $9 was a very respectable size. At the end of the day, a 3 star 'a-ok' rating seems fitting to me for this restaurant. If I'm back in town I would probably go somewhere else just for variety and to try something new. The food was tasty enough and service pleasant enough, but nothing stood out so much to me that warrants heaps of praise.

I went here for lunch and had a great pulled pork sandwich. Service was just OK, but I enjoyed my meal. They have many vegetarian/vegan options and they said a lot of their produce is fresh from their own garden.

Sweet Basil's doesn't take reservations so we just showed up a little after six on a Friday night. We were able to be seated right away at a table for two in the main seeting area. We were the last to be seated, those arrived after us waited for seating. It is a small venue with seating for about 10-12 small tables. We were interested in sitting in the main seating area which had seating for about 4 or 5 tables. We ordered from the menu for diiner. I ordered the chicken and my partner ordered the pork osso bucco. Both meals were good. The osso bucco was tendlr, favorful and a genrous portion. The chicken was also a generous portion and flavorful. There was no free bread or appetizer. The bread and butter was $2. Normally I would expect bread and butter complimentary with an entree. The service for the meal was slow. I was surpised given the small size of the seathing area. We did have to ask for water and wine refills. After dinner, we moved to the wine bar section of the restaruant. Kudos for Sweet Basils for letitting us move from the restaurant to the wine bar after dinner when we wanted to have dessert with the Friday night music. The band was surprisingly good for a small venu. It wasn't so loud that it drown out our conversation. It as great entertainment for a Cannon Beach evening.

Tucked away at the beginning of the main drag in Cannon Beach, Sweet Basil's Cafe is unknown to a lot of people. We selected it based on the bulk of positive Yelp reviews and my fellow Yelpers steered us correctly again! The restaurant is small and is adjacent to a bar area that has occasional live music. However, if you get a seat in the restaurant portion, you will be happy you did. The appetizers are excellent and the food - much of it Cajun/Creole inspired - is much better than most establishments in Cannon Beach. Their food is worthy of competing in a big city and not just a sleepy beach town. Appetizers: We had the Bison/Bacon Meatballs and the Bacon-Wrapped Dates. The meatballs were a savory delight. The dates were rich and decadent. I would put both dishes up against upscale Portland locations like Tasty N Sons. Entrees: Longing for New Orleans cuisine, I went with the Shrimp Creole. It was nice and spicy with well-cooked rice and above average shrimp. My wife chose the Pork Shank Osso Buco and it was succulent. She couldn't finish the entire shank, so I was happy to stuff myself silly with the remaining fall-off-the-bone meat. Drinks: They had a few beers on tap, including Ninkasi Total Domination, one of the best beers in Oregon. They also had a nice wine selection. Service: Average at best, but the owner stopped by and chatted with us for a while. That was nice and unexpected. Ambiance: Sort of rustic on the inside, but warm and inviting. The live music from the bar and the canned music over the speakers was a bit too loud for dinner, but the food made up for the noise. Sweet Basil's Cafe is a great place to dine in Cannon Beach.

Stumbled upon this place walking around Cannon beach on our first night. Amazing, local, organic food with a Creole flavor. A very Intimate setting with a home like feel. Every single dish we ordered was excellent. An overall wonderful experience.

Great live music, super yummy crawfish pie! I'd never had crawfish before, and I think I'm hooked! This place isn't super large, but the ambiance is good. The booths and chair backs are made from old headboards, really quite quaint. They make everything to order so it was really tasty and felt prepared with love. I can't wait to go again. We dined here twice on our trip, and enjoyed it both times.

Sweet Basil never disappoints. It is everything WE enjoy. A relaxed atmosphere, great music, wonderful service and fantastic, fresh, healthy food choices. "Mom" (our server) is sweet and hard working. She asked if the dog waiting patiently outside was ours and would we mind if she gave him a dog biscuit :-) On this visit I had the veggie wrap and my husband had the apple chicken salad. Both were fresh and VERY satisfying... we finished with a lovely slice of marionberry pie... yum! Tip: Check restaurant.com ... you may find a coupon there for this little gem of a lunch spot. (They offer gluten-free items for those who are gluten sensitive)

I must have been there on an off night because the reviews on Yelp led me to believe this place was one of the better eateries in Cannon Beach and I found it to be one of the worst dining experiences ever. Seriously. Maybe Sam (reviewed on 3/28/12) and I were there when they were out of fresh and local ingredients. We arrived shortly before 6pm on a Sunday night when there was live music in the Wine Bar, so we chose to sit on that side. They were about 1/2 full, including the two of us when we sat down. It is a small place, so there was only one server who is also the manager/wine steward. He told us about the special for the evening and we ordered a few wines by the glass while we looked over the menu. The table next to us placed their order a few minutes later which we were also ready to do, evidenced by the fact that our menus were no longer in our hands, but on the table, kind of the universal sign to an observant server that the patrons are ready to order. Sometime later, he returned to take our orders. We are slowly sipping our wines (nothing special in those glasses so no reason to hurry through to get another), hearing our bellies rumble louder as the table next to us is served and makes it 3/4 of the way through their meals when the server returns to tell us our food is almost up. 10 minutes later he returns again, unfortunately though, not with our food but to tell us the food is almost ready. He returns yet again to tell us our food is almost ready and sensing our discomfort, asks if we are upset, to which we reply, "kinda, we're really hungry". He explains that it is taking so long because we did not order until everyone else had already put their order in and it is a small kitchen. Oh, so it is my fault that the kitchen is slow and you lack the forethought to offer even a slice of bread? My dining companion says "If it hits 7:30 and we don't have food, we are out of here". It's not like we got to the restaurant before 6... oh wait, yeah we did. At somewhere between 7:20 and 7:25, our first of two tapas arrives. Really, first of two? So we dive into the "fried eggplant" to find it is tepid, limp, slimy and lacking any seasoning whatsoever. After prying the bottom off the salt shaker because nothing comes out the top, spanking a giant clump of salt onto the side of the plate and then reaching in for a pinch, I season my "fried eggplant", and eat my 1/2 - not because it is mouth watering, fresh or even hints of local, but because the wine has started to eat a hole in my empty stomach and I need to put something in there. Server/manager returns to take away the not empty plate and returns again a few minutes later with the second of our two tapas; the shrimp and artichoke dish. While I expected the shrimp to be from the freezer, I was not expecting the canned artichokes that accompanied them. I guess it was again my fault for presuming a restaurant that serves "fresh and local" would actually use something like the artichokes as I saw at the PSU Farmer's Market that same weekend from Tillamook, when in fact the cook informed me that they always use canned artichokes. My bad. But that was the last straw. We had waited close to 1.5 hours to be served slimy eggplant and canned artichokes. I approached the served at the register and asked to pay so we could leave. He fully charged me for both tapas and the wine while the defensive cook/owner exclaimed that artichokes are always from the can. When I tried to bring up the fact that they are actually in season and available in Tillamook, he waved me off and put the fish that he was about to cook (the final part of our order) back in the fridge. Yeah, the fish hadn't even been started yet. I was flustered and eager to get out of there, so I paid. We went to the Lumberyard to get a burger, but as I sat there and got AMAZING service from the bar tender, who offered us nuts as we waited for our burger because we were HUNGRY, I got up and walked back over to Sweet Basil's to ask for my money back. Never in my life have I been treated the way they treated me. I started my conversation with the server/manager with "I am here because I would like to respectfully request a refund" to which he responded "NO, you were never going to be satisfied, no matter what we did". I was taken aback, then requested he at least refund my tip, to which he also said "NO" then he opened to door to get me to leave. Which I did not do. After he accused me of doing "this" all the time (meaning I make it a habit of going to restaurants, staying 1.5 hours without eating and then leaving and asking for my money back) I was quite upset. The cook/owner got involved and finally had the manners to give me my money back. Customer service fail. Try the Lumberyard or the Irish Table, they at least deliver on what they advertise and know how to treat their customers.

When you follow your passion and create an out of the ordinary establishment, you are going to thrill some, but shrink your overall customer base. So, for me, this is going to be a qualified endorsement. This place could and should be charming, but I think we caught it a bit on an off day. They opened about a 1/2 hour late and were preparing a very large to-go order at the beginning of service. Combined with a hiring sign in the window, it meant that the service portion of our meal wasn't great. It was a little too cool to sit at the outdoor tables, so we grabbed one of the indoor booths by the kitchen. And what I observed, is that more than most places in Cannon Beach, much of their clientele appeared to be locals. And this is a good thing, because you feel like you are dining in a secret garden that is a bit tucked away from the main street. I also loved the shabby chic Southern style decor. The owner, John Sowa, was trained as a cajun/creole chef who decided to focus on local, organic, vegan and vegetarian fare. I couldn't pass up the Javanese coconut curry vegetable soup and it was one of my favorite soups of the year. For the entrees, we chose the "Mojo" shrimp po-boy and Sweet Basil's crab and artichoke melt which we were told is one of their most popular items. Both were excellent. So they cover their bases well for the non-vegetarian crowd. Unfortunately, this isn't really a place to take most kids. They have three items on the kids menu, but the grilled cheese sandwiches were left mostly untouched. We tried them too, and I have to say I agree with their assessment. But this problem was managed by a trip to Pizza A'fetta down the street after our meal. So while our first visit didn't win raves from everyone in our family, I think many diners would find this to be a local gem.

Out of all the places I had tasty gluten-free food this weekend Sweet Basil's was the only place that actually had Udi's Gluten-free bread. I would give them five stars for that basic gesture toward the gluten-free community. Huge score for that! I had a crab and artichoke melt on one slice of Udi's, and a very basic organic greens salad for $14.95. There wasn't any color to the salad except for the various greens. I had two small pieces of artichoke and a small mound of crab on my melt, not sure what kind of cheese it was as I don't think the menu shared that information. The language on their lunch menu was confusing to me and it said that all sandwiches and melts came with cole slaw and their home made corn chips. Corn chips are my favorite and my lunch didn't come out with them. In fact, I ordered that melt so that I would get the corn chips. I didn't care about the cole slaw but I would have eaten it. The friend that I was with also had a melt and he got the cole slaw and the corn chips so I ate some of his chips. I felt deprived by not receiving what said would come with my meal. Also, the price was really expensive for what I actually was served so I most likely wouldn't choose seafood next time I visit Sweet Basil's. My meal was $6 more than my friend's meal and I actually got less food. Service was really slow for the food to come out but the Manager was quick to bring us more water. It would be really cool if their menu was easier to read for people who are vegan, gluten-free, etc. If there had been a little "GF" next to the items I knew were absolutely safe I would have loved that so much. Maybe next time.

Sweet Basil's Cafe is one of the gems of Cannon Beach. The decor is a charming shabby chic, with the space split between the cafe portion, which includes the open kitchen area and the more intimate wine bar. Service was prompt and friendly, and the live music (flamenco guitar) complemented the evening well. Dishes are well-thought through with the Cajun-based items and tapas being areas where the Cafe particularly shines. The Chicken Tchoupitoulas was complemented by the Andouille sausage and a wonderful Bearnaise. The Crab Cakes were delightful, and solidly crab as opposed to what might find elsewhere. Vegan and vegetarian items dot the menu as well, making it friendly for groups. This is solidly one of the best values in Cannon Beach, where the chef truly knows his art, puts care and love into the food and keeps that his priority. Highly recommended.

something very odd about this place. Went there for lunch on Sunday. Cook looked like he wanted to chop up the guests. Waitress was by far the slowest waitress ever. Took 15 minutes to take our order, and after waiting another 30 minutes for our food, we left. Which I've never done before. Can't say how the food is, but not a place to go when you're hungry.

Let's start with the food.... Well, we would have loved to have started with some food, but alas, it was not to be..... We put in an order for our toddler, with the statement that we wanted to get it out ASAP while we perused the menu. After a long wait, the server reappeared and took the rest of our order. And then we waited. And waited. And WAITED. AND WAITED!!!! Okay, first off, sandwiches (hot or cold) should not take over one hour! No one came by to check that we had not collapsed from hunger or ennui. The Donner Party had more attentive service (although fewer vegetarian options). Finally, mustering up the last few molecules of glucose coursing through my veins, I walked up to the counter to ask about the status of our nourishment. After figuring out that we were the folks with the constitution to wait out this gastronomic game of chicken, I was told our sandwiches were in the oven and in a short (compared to the prior hour or so) amount of time, our food arrived. I was vainly hoping that the food would be worth the wait (although how could it?). As we wolfed down the food, we realized that all we got was mediocre food we could have made at home in about 3 minutes.... And they had the audacity to ask us if we wanted dessert! This from a place were the service is measured by time-lapse photography! Only go if you have nothing to do and no where to go.

The food here is great, so is the ambiance. Waitstaff is friendly and helpful. Warning: service is snail slow. My husband and I have been here for over an hour and we've had just one course; a woman sitting solo has been waiting for her food for at least 40 minutes. Again, the food is awesome, but maybe sit down when you're just starting to get hungry.

Our family enjoyed a wonderful lunch. My 15 year old son was admittedly skeptical when he saw the words vegan and organic but was won over by the pulled pork grilled cheese. The chicken apple salad was both beautiful and delicious. Thank you for caring about the quality of your ingredients.

OVERALL I'd actually like to give 3.5 stars. The food was inconsistent. Pricing was fair for the quality/quantity. The waitress couldn't have cared less. Extremely small venue. Live music. No reservations. GET THE DUNGENESS CRAB STUFFED PORTOBELLO if you go. FOOD Veggie & hummus plate: fresh veggies. horrible hummus. I'm not sure how they managed to screw this one up, but they did! The hummus was extremely bland and the texture was really oily. Sad faces all around. Bokchoy & wild mushroom soup: simple. delicious. perfect for a cold night. Salumi plate: mediocre. lackluster presentation. Dungeness crab stuffed portobello: devine. would have loved it with a little less mayo. Salmon w/ Thai curry: large fillet. spicy. hearty. good. SERVICE Our waitress was borderline patronizing. She checked on us infrequently and never asked how the food was. She didn't explain any of the dishes (would have been nice with the salumi platter) and was constantly trying to upsell even though we ordered a fair amount of food for two!

Unless you are vegetarian or gluten free, I'd go elsewhere. There was nothing terrible about our lunch, but it definitely wasn't anything that tasty or special either. Portions are small, prices are high, but they do have tons of vegetarian options. Oh and service is terrible. We had a very grumpy, rude waitress, she looked like she hated having customers. The one redeeming quality of this restaurant is that they do have plenty of outdoor seating for those sunny beach days.

I'm so glad I found this restaurant in Cannon Beach! I was dreading having to find a decent place to eat that would offer healthy options. My boyfriend and I came across this place and were impressed with their menu. Loved the customer service, super friendly and we didn't have to wait long for the food to arrive. Will definitely visit again.

In Portland, I'd give this four stars, but for being in Cannon Beach, it deserves five stars for having multiple delicious vegan options! Actually I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place before. I try to come here every time I'm in the area. My favorite item on the menu is the vegan Italian panini, and I've been very impressed with their soup each time I've had it. The place is small, but the atmosphere is nice and the service is very friendly and welcoming. I have nothing bad to say about this place. I guess the seating isn't super comfortable. But it won't stop me from returning. Can't wait to go back!

We stopped here for lunch the minute we got to Cannon Beach. We wanted to order our food to go, but were told we had to stay to order that day because they were out of to-go boxes...errr...or something. So, we ordered and decided to sit outside and go get the dog out of the car. Luckily, the weather was perfect on the coast(a rarity) so it was wonderful to sit out and enjoy a meal. The woman who served us was really kind and eager to please. She even gave a biscuit to our pup who was being good, but not feeling particularly sociable that day. We ordered the Crab Louie Wrap and the Garden Sandwich. Both were served with sides of their house-made coleslaw and some natural corn chips. The sandwiches were great, but I could eat their coleslaw all day. It was made with more of an oil and vinegar dressing rather than creamy with mayo. And the dressing was seasoned really well with the sweet/salty factor that makes any proper slaw great. Then there was plenty of celery seed too, which brought it up to my number one slaw ever eaten(sorry Mom). I enjoyed the Garden Sandwich, delighted in the Summer squash that was included in the layers upon layers of veggie magic, and even dipped the sandwich in the remainder dressing in my slaw cup. I tried a bite of the Crab Louie Wrap and it tasted good, but it smelled more fishy than I like. Minus the mild confusion at the beginning, I really enjoyed my visit to Sweet Basil's.

My boyfriend and I had the BEST night here. The menu was inventive, but familiar and every plate we chose was spot on! The waiter (who I assume was the owner) was knowledgeable and funny. He really worked the room. A few highlights: shrimp cocktail with a banana chili salsa. It sounds strange but was amazingly good. The sweetness of the bananas worked so well with the spicy chilis. Like everyone on YELP says, the pulled pork sliders were ridiculous and yummy. But, the highpoint were the dungeness crab cakes. They were packed with crab and didn't appear to have any "fillers." With just the slightest panko breading, we really felt like we got what we paid for with the crab. They were served with some amazing remoulade sauce or something. SUPER SUPER yummy. We are planning on making Cannon Beach a common vacation for us, and will certainly stop at Sweet Basil when we go back.

Husband and I came here for dinner on a weeknight. There was live music in the wine bar section of the restaurant while we were there, but it was a good volume so we could chat in the main restaurant section. Waitress very friendly. Food took a long time to arrive, but the menu clearly states that this will be the case as the meals are made fresh to order. I had lentil soup and a house salad. Husband had the chicken.everything was delicious. Nice find.

Stopped by for dinner and what a good idea. The food was good and rather service was great! The clams Mateo was delicious and sooooo yummy. The curry salmon filet was tasty but needed a little salt to boost the flavor. The crab stuffed portabello was also good. I would recommend this as a go.

Great food, healthy and simple. Staff are nice and its pretty quiet for a place on the strip. Worth checking out when you are tired of the usual vacation coast fair.

It's no secret that Cannon beach has a number of small, unique food shops...I don't think there's a single franchise in the town (is there a law against 7-11's & McDonalds there?). So it can be hard to find the creme of the creme when every place is special in its own respect. BUT, alas, heed this review! If you're looking for a DELICIOUS lunch, entirely made of FRESH, LOCAL, ORGANIC food, maybe (almost exclusively) by the head chef, John (who used to own a kickin' food shop in Seattle), this is the place to be. It's very small cafe (4-5 tables in the main area, with an extra few tables in the extra wine room next door) in a small multi-store mall. You know it wasn't originally built for a restaurant, but who cares! You're 5 feet from the kitchen & can see the crew making the magic happen. But really, it's about the food: - Portions are perfect for what you should eat for a meal leaving you satisfied but not stuffed. - Prices are fare for the great quality of the meal (most sandwiches are ~$7-9) - People serving/waiting were friendly, knowledgeable, & efficient. * Chicken salad sandwhich - delicious balance of chicken, celery, raspberries, sauce, & veggies *BBQ pork & the speciale BBQ brisket sndwhich on a po'boy roll - hot yet moist meat, rich flavor, soft yet toasted bun...an awesome bite! * Over 8 different desserts including gluten free & vegan options were offered that day! I really can't say anything bad about this place! I;ll definitely visit again when i'm in the area!!! A great suggestion if it's a beautiful day: get the sandwich to go, and head to Ecola park; take the trail northward that parallels the beach (2 great viewpoints ~1/3mi down where you can eat, or hike the whole 1.25mi down to the beach & enjoy the best that the Oregon Coast has to offer!!!

THIS is the place for healthy and/or vegetarian meals in Cannon Beach. Loved my Vegetarian Reuben (smokey tomato field roast vegan slices, sauerkraut, thousand island dressing, and swiss cheese served on whole wheat) but there are many other good choices too. Sit down and relax because you're not going to get fast-food and if they're busy your meal isn't going to come to you very quickly. But you're warned about this right on the menu so don't expect differently. I personally like the slow pace.

This place is so great. Went for a late dinner, and walked in only a few minutes before they were closing. The waitress was so nice to us and pretty much made us feel like she wanted to make our dinner experience the best ever. Friendly, down to earth service and atmosphere but there was actually very fancy and unique food. I like the mom and pop feel, but if you want more of a wine bar feel go next door and get the same food. Food was delicious. Fun menu items!

Love this place! My wife and I dropped in on a Friday night. There was a small group playing live music - reggae, R&R, blues - they were great and interacted with the audience. I can't speak to the entire menu, but the crab and portobello mushroom entree was OUTSTANDING. We do some gourmet cooking and really appreciated the amazing combo of flavors. Salad was fresh, fresh with sweet tomatoes. Dessert was a marionberry pie - not too sweet, which is unusual. Service was very attentive and engaging.

We visited this place twice on a recent trip to Cannon Beach. The first time we wandered in after looking for a place still open for late dinner. We were starving! Luckily we were greeted and seated promptly. The server recommended a great bottle of wine and our appetizer came out fairly quickly (smoked salmon bruschetta). There was a great blues trio playing and the ambience has a pleasant funky, character. Our food wasn't bad - we enjoyed and finished our meals (jambalaya and chicken pot pie). It wasn't the best I've ever had and I think there is room for improvement. Based on the vibe and menu we had high expectations. We enjoyed a pleasant couple of hours and were glad we'd found it. The second night we popped in for dessert which was tasty and homemade apple pie and pecan pie. They had live music again and the staff was totally nice even though we weren't ordering a lot. We had a relaxed evening out, good wine and to enjoy a bit of character and live music. Did it live up to some of the 4-5 star restaurants I've visited elsewhere? No. But we would totally go back and enjoy what this little place does have to offer. Extra bonus that they were open and willing to serve us after 9pm when everything else was closed.

The Wine Bar was a total surprise to find such a comfortable place to enjoy a variety of reasonable wines. We tried several tapas selections and made it dinner. Great flavors, impressive. We were there Friday night and the guitar player knew his stuff. Good food, good wine, good music, and good service. What else do you need?

This is a gem hidden away in Cannon Beach. Due to the kids, we usually get food to go after spending the day playing in the sand, but since it was my birthday we decided to try for a sit-down dinner. The food here is delicious - thoughtfully prepared with quality ingredients and artfully arranged. I wish I had taken a picture of my roast chicken and apple salad to share. The bacon-wrapped dates stuffed with manchego cheese was divine! The kids (ages 2 and 5) were happy with their grilled cheese, sliced apples and chips from the kids menu, and my husband was well satisfied with his spicy jambalaya and beer selection. We even got serenaded at the end by a smiling musician playing a ukulele(?) singing about a hedgehog. A really pleasant experience. I would give it 4.5 stars if I could. The only issue was about the decor. Although there were lovely touches like fresh flowers in a cute ceramic vase, I feel like the setup didn't do the food justice. Highly recommended overall!

The open-faced The Sweet Basil Crab & Artichoke Melt sounded so tasty and warm on a cold, windy, rainy afternoon in February, that we both ordered it. We were not disappointed. The crab was incredibly flavorful, and the greens on the side were the perfect accompaniment. True, we had a to wait a little longer for the food than we would have in most restaurants, but literature on the table told us of how this was because our food is actually prepared upon order. Well, it was worth the wait. Also, the older female waitress was adorable, asking us if she added our bill correctly!

Sweet basil's cafe is small (like 4 tables small) and cozy in a country charm sort of way- the type of place you'd expect in a beach town. The sandwich selection is extensive and consists of options to appease the masses- carnivores (pulled pork) and vegans alike. My friend and I were starving and split the crab louis wrap and turkey sandwich. Both were yummy- turkey better than crab louis. The turkey on wheat was accompanied by cranberries and nuts- the kind of which I'm blanking on right now. Totally random right?? This wasn't a lets recreate Thanksgiving with cranberry and turkey kind of moment. There was actually dried cranberries on the sandwich, which left a decidely delicious flavor to the whole thing. The crab louis was not nearly as good, but I was thrilled to see that it wasn't drowning in mayo. I can pretend I'm being healthy. Sandwiches were a bit pricey- around $8, but huge and accompanied by a yummy garlicky coleslaw. I would definitely recommend this place for a bite to eat while roaming around Cannon Beach.

We just ate at Sweet Basil's last night, and it was a great experience! Service was excellent. Our very friendly, knowledgeable waitress had plenty of detailed information for us. She was happy to spend a few minutes talking with us so that she could tailor her advice to our own interests. Guitar music back in the wine bar was pleasant but not overpoweringly loud, so we were still able to relax and hold a conversation at our table. We were there for a late dinner and the staff welcomed us to stay for another glass of wine while they finished up their service and got closed up. Food was very tasty. We had: Cheese plate -- A variety of 4-5 cheeses. The quality and amount were well worth the $9.95 (unlike some places). Crab Cakes -- Delicious and absolutely packed with crab!!! I had this as my entree and was pleased as punch. Definitely worth the $18.50 pricetag. Crawfish Etoufee -- The crawdads were cooked to tender perfection. My boyfriend said the sauce was tasty, but not his favorite thing ever. He described the dish as "one-note" because it was crawfish, sauce, and nothing else (no vegetables or additional flavors). He agreed that my crab cakes were the better choice. Wine -- Great choices, and our waitress helped us pick a nice pinot. We also enjoyed a dessert wine and a glass of a different pinot before leaving. We will definitely return!

Looking at the menu my husband and I were excited to try Sweet Basil's and were sadly disappointed! As longtime visitors to Cannon Beach we were thrilled to finally try Sweet Basil's. The restaurant is small and intimate with a menu that upon reading looks very tempting. Upon arrival we selected a out door table and were notified that they just received a rush and would get to us as soon as possible. As former NYC restaurant people we understand that you can get a rush and were appreciative of the notice. Little did we know that after that they would forget my wine and that we would have to wait 45 minutes for a cheese plate! As for the food, our first appetizer/small bite was delicious but the cheese plate was nothing but Costco cheeses and jams arranged carefully on a plate (note to chef...Oregon is home to many wonder cheese makers...do some research because many people shop and buy cheeses at Costco)! I would like to say that we enjoyed our entrees but after waiting a good hour had to tell them we had to leave to make a show at the theater (which we mentioned to our server prior to ordering our drinks). Our food was then wrapped and brought to us with the bill. We were assured by our server that the owner/manager felt terrible but never saw them. Note to owner/manager: if you are truly sorry for the services a customer receives tell them in person. Also, when guests have a noticeably bad experience comp a drink or two...you would be amazed at what this goodwill will do towards getting a return customer. But as we received neither, we will look towards other restaurants in Cannon Beach to fill our stomachs (like Driftwood or the Irish Table) and will tell everyone we know going to Cannon Beach (and living in Cannon Beach which we know many) to avoid this restaurant.

Such a cute place. Hubby and I had the red bean soup and split pea soup specials. I had mine with a salad and hubby had his with the crab melt. Son had pb&j and they made a veggie sandwich special for my picky daughter. All of the food was excellent. Service was slow, but there was only one older lady waiting on all the tables and she was doing her best! My son forgot something, and they found it and kept it until we could return the next day.

I'm really bummed to say that our experience was less than stellar. We were greeted by a rude bar tender who would not allow us to sit at a table due to it being reserved, however when we called we were told "no reservations". After being seated in the kitchen side of the restaurant we observed the bar tender seating a couple, obviously his friends at the table we were refused. I'm confident they were friends by the hugs that were exchanged. When we were seated we were immediately brought water but not greeted or informed of who our waiter/waitress was. When she arrived we were given our menus and had our questions answered. Our appetizers arrived with one of our entrees. I didn't receive my entree until well after my wife had finished hers. Big faux paw in my opinion. I ordered the Crawfish Étouffée, good but no variation of flavors. Kind of a one note meal. We did enjoy watching the chef prepare meals and the music was a nice background albeit a little loud. I was very thankful that the bartender was not our server, I watched him "primp" his hair multiple times...imagine the fonz from happy days...and then grab drinks and food without washing his hands!! This may be ok at home but not in a restaurant. This is NOT a place for a large party. Most seats are 4 tops with a couple of 2 seaters

Maybe dinner is better, I went for lunch and I could make at home what I ordered better! I ordered a crab melt. What I got was a thick piece of toast with canned crab meat on top and a slice of melted cheese! It was dry and I didn't eat the entire meal. The staff seemed uninterested we were even there and I had to "ask" for another glass of wine in order for anyone to offer. I will not eat here again.

My wife and I visit here for lunch mid week. Being vegetarian we sometimes find it challenging to find good options dining out. Finding a restaurant in this little coastal town that offers a good variety of options that do it right was a great find! Yelp led us here and the reviews are right. This place is not strictly vegetarian as they offer meat dishes too. We ordered the soup special of the day, a cabbage potato carrot celery soup that was excellent.

My husband and I just returned from a weekend in Cannon Beach and ate two out of our six meals at Sweet Basil's. Saturday we wandered in for lunch and I ordered the creole red bean soup and it was delicious! Perfect amount of heat and very filling. Along with the soup I ordered the veggie wrap and thoroughly enjoyed it, however I thought it lacked a little kick. I added the coleslaw to it though and it was perfect. My husband ordered the clam and (cod, I believe) chowder and it was really pretty phenomenal. One of the best chowders either of us has ever had, there was such a depth of flavor! He also enjoyed his turkey wrap. Neither of us could finish our entire meal, the portion sizes are very generous. We were so delighted with lunch that we went back for dinner and ordered the bacon wrapped dates, smoked salmon bruschetta, crawfish etoufee, crab cakes and we shared the chocolate pecan pie - ya we went a little nuts ;) The bacon wrapped dates were very rich, but that was to be expected, however, the cheese was not melted in the center and when I have had them in the past that was the best part. So, a little disappointed on those. The salmon bruschetta was absolutely amazing, my crawfish etoufee came out a little cold, but the flavors were out of this world. The crab cakes were great, very heavy on the crab and light on the breading and we were very thankful for that. The chocolate pecan pie was sinful, and a great way to end our dinner. After that we took a long stroll on the beach and it was a wonderful evening! Overall, this was a great spot. The wine suggestions were great and a delicious accompaniment to our meal, we just wished the dates were a little more on-point and my dinner was piping hot. Food does take quite a while to get to your table, but you can tell it's because he's spending quality time on each plate and it IS worth being patient. We'll be back :)

This place has Amazing food! The Chef is an unbelievable cook and his recipes are so unique! WOW! I had the Thai Coconut Curry Salmon Filet, my husband had the Chicken Tchoupitoulas, we also had their Crab Cakes for an appetizer, a house salad to share, and of course a nice glass of wine. Plenty of food, and everything was like a taste treat! YUM! We will definitely come back each time we go to Cannon Beach. Oh, and I forgot to mention that most nights they have live music in the lounge. We sat in the dining room but from our table, we could see a little of the band. A very romantic and relaxing evening for us both. We just sat back, took our time and enjoyed every bite!

Up near the end curve of Hemlock hides Sweet Basil's Cafe, nestled off-street at the end of a board sidewalk, facing out onto trees and bird feeders attended by busy, chirping avian visitors flitting amongst the white and pink blossoms on trees and newly fallen onto the grass. The food is simply described, and simply but lovingly created. Sandwiches, salads, and soups to please vegan, vegetarian, and omnivore's palates alike, brought to the table with care, and dog biscuits for canine companions when you're sitting outside on benches on the porch, safe from the rain.... We sampled the Greek Spinach and Orzo soup (hearty, warm, lots of spinach flavor tempered by the slight sweetness of orzo and silky tomato), the apple and Cheddar panini (melted golden Cheddar surrounding crisp thin sliced of Granny Smith apples) and a Dungeness crab-stuffed Portobello mushroom with spices, peppers, and topped with melted cheese. Everything was good, simple, and wholesome, and I'll never complain about a spot where outdoor seating can mean wooden booths and round plastic picnic tables rather than hard wrought iron patio furniture.

We stopped by on a drizzly September day after walking around Cannon Beach. They informed us of a 10-15 minute wait, but we were sitting inside within 5 minutes. The menu was mostly sandwiches and the place was fairly cramped. The service was slow given the size of the place, but they were quite busy to be fair. We got the pulled pork sandwich as our waitress recommended, as well as the crab louie wrap. Both were good but didn't wow us. The portion sizes were quite big and each sandwich came with pickled cabbage and tortilla chips. It was fine for what it is, but I'll try somewhere else if I'm ever in the area again.

  • Sam N.

Went there for lunch and the wait was nearly 30 min for a salad, a grilled cheese, and a slice of bread with veggies and melted cheese. The sides were Costco style tortilla chips. Food was served on plastic plates that had been well used. The bathroom entrance is right next to the kitchen and the dinning area so I could smell things I didn't want to smell. I did like the veggie melt but I won't eat there again. Maybe they are better at dinner and the wine bar. I assume from the pictures that dinner is served on ceramic plates instead of plastic.

Good place for a lighter, organic lunch. We would have missed this tiny space if this wasn't recommended to us. Service is a little awkward because they are a bit too laid back and slow but it wasn't a big deal to us. The food is very fresh. We tried the tomato basil soup, which was smooth and perfectly seasoned, not too acidic like a lot of tomato soups can be. For my lunch I tried the crab roll which was PACKED with crab. It was lightly dressed and fresh tasting. Not heavy at all. Their coleslaw was also very good, one of the more unique coleslaws i've had. If you want to get away from fried food in this area, I recommend coming here!

Hey, how are ya? Miss me yet? How's my hair? OK, now for the continuation of my review (Damn you Yelp & your word count limits!!) I will make this review shorter and sweeter... Pros: Inventive Menu, Talented Chef / Owner, Fresh Ingredients, Not a Chain / Corporation, Cute Concept & Name. Cons: Bartender's Hygiene Skills or Lack Thereof, Bartender's Snobby Attitude & Transparent Dislike for Children, Uncomfortable Seating, Dishes Being Served Out of Rhythm (Appetizers with entrees, long delays between dishes, etc.), Clueless Server (Friendly, sweet, but no tact, nor professionalism), A Bit Pricey on some items (some are well within range), Offer more options for te sandwiches than the fresh from the bag multi-grain chips, Inconsistent Service (some tables ignored, while others got full attention -- we got attention and served before some that came before us), Sloppy Bar Area (lattice work shoved up in the rafters...I like rustic, but that is just sloppy, especially if one is trying to be a "classy, Cannon Beach bistro"), Loud Recorded Music that was like a sound check, Creeper Musician wandering the dining area with a briefcase with a teddy bear sticking out of it (gentleman in the fedora hat...never got to hear him play, but his odd leering at folks while wandering around pre-show was rather disturbing), Ditch the kid's menu and maybe the annoying children will not be brought in (this really isn't a kid friendly place, as witnessed by tots climbing on patio furniture, dumping bird seed everywhere, etc.) (Granted, NOT THE FAULT of the establishment...piss poor parenting by clueless yuppies is to blame) (Establishment, namely bartender is at fault for his "Nervous Nelly" reaction to children and negative vibe he gives off regarding them). I think with a few tactful adjustments, Sweet Basil's can be a wonderful place to dine. Sadly, the behaviours of a select few, tarnish and over shadow the culinary skills of the chef / owner. I get that good help is hard to find, but if you enable these poor traits, it will never get better. Put the SERVICE back in service industry.

Sweet Basil's cafe is a welcome relief from several more formulaic restaurants nearby in Cannon Beach. Casual, with an eclectic menu and live music. Fort George beers are great (servers should pour these before bringing to the table, rather than putting the can on the table), and the frosted glass is appreciated. Pulled port is superb: spicy and tasty. Salads are great too.

  • Andrea D.

The food here is very disappointing and way too pricey for what you get. The chef seems quite inflexible -- as in they will charge you $3 to put chicken in the side of a salad. Really? The pot pies are actually vegetables in a gravy with a puff pastry thing on top. There is no 'pie' at all. And the veggie reuben lacks imagination. It is mostly sauerkraut with a piece of tofurkey. Trust me, there are a lot of ways to make that a more inventive dish. Unlike other reviews that I read, we had good service. Our wait staff was very helpful. I will say that the wine list was good and we enjoyed the bottle of wine we ordered. Unfortunately we won't be going back on our next visit to Cannon Beach.

Date Visited: Saturday 8/21/10 (Lunch) A nice drive to the coast left us all (that would be my father, his wife, my husband, and of course me) quite hungry. We walked down the main street in Cannon Beach, heading to Sweet Basil's. I had found out about this place from a co-worker who said it was quite good, so we had to check it out. We were a little unsure of what to expect as we stepped inside. It was a nice cool day in Cannon Beach and the cafe felt warm. There were only a few tables in the main section. The cafe is vegetarian and vegan friendly, but also has meats for those who...well...never mind. I'll save that comment for another day. We all ended up ordering paninis. I had the Italian Panini. My father had the Grilled Cheese and Apple. His wife had the Reuben. My husband had the Mushroom. All were delicious. Each came with a little side of cole slaw and corn chips. We got to eat and look out at the bird feeder, which was quite popular. For dessert, my husband had the vegan brownie, which he liked. My father and his wife decided to go with a banana/chocolate bread pudding thing that had mixed reviews. I am quite sure my husband and I will return in the future.

Overall just okay. Had the bacon wrapped figs to start. Bacon was overlooked and the cheese was nonexistent. Entrees were shrimp creole and a chicken dish. Shrimp was plentiful and had a little kick. But overall flavor was slightly above average. Chicken had some nice spices, but would have been better if it was on the bone with a crispy skin. Both dishes would have been something you can make from home. Cute place, maybe next time just come in for a drink and an appetizer.

Great spot and here is why 1. Food- had the pork shank and it was wonderful. Cooked in red wine sauce and sits on a bed of polenta. Was wonderful and just loved it. Will try at home with a lamb shank 2. Venue- cozy, nice decor. loved it. the trees outside were wonderful, cooling. little tables great, we sat at a booth in doors 3. Service- great waiter jonathan. new but awesome!!!!! gave us free bread and butter Overall we had to wait a while for the food but it was great. The chef was friendly

Aww, no more breakfast. That's hugely disappointing. I'm tempted to knock off a star just for that. BUT, the lunch food was great. I had the grilled ham and cheese sandwich with tomato and jalapeno jelly- very, very good! The veggie wrap was fine and the kids grilled cheese was fine (as stated by family members. But really, how bad can you screw up a plain veggie wrap and grilled cheese?) We got there a few minutes before opening and there was already a good dozen people waiting to be served. Maybe they could open earlier and throw some waffles back on the menu? hint hint!

I came here earlier this evening, right around 5pm. We were the first folks in the restaurant that evening. The is a gem of a place! It's small, cozy, intimate, and they did a good job making the place look like it was a New Orleans restaurant (according to my husband). There was a jazz band that setup and played during the later part of our dinner and it was quite nice. Their music was mellow and was not loud at all, so you could still have a conversation without projecting across the room. The menu was simple! But I appreciated their farm-to-table stance, buying fruits and veggies locally, etc. The best thing about this restaurant--you can get some of their dishes made vegan. Their curry and etoufee sauces are inherently vegan, so when requested, they could swap out the seafood for portobello or tofu. I had the vegetarian pot pie. The flaky crust was delicious, but I wish the contents of the pie were a little less watery. I had their chocolate pecan pie which was the best part of the eating experience! The texture of the chocolate was like a lava cake, instead of the pudding/mouse texture usually found in chocolate pies. It was sinful!

I am so glad that we tried this great restaurant! The food was impeccably prepared & so delicious. We had a fantastic shrimp & artichoke appetizer followed by 2 different crab dishes - both scrumptious! We enjoyed a bottle of organic wine while listening to some great live music in the wine bar. All in all, it was a very positive and memorable experience and I highly recommend it!

An intimate, local spot in Cannon Beach. Great for a date or drink with a close friend. The food was excellent - all locally produced, seasonal, etc. Lots of vegetarian options. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The wine selection was local as well and fairly extensive. Definitely recommend for a nice evening out in Cannon Beach.

This place is very cozy. I was able to sit right next to the window and see the hummingbirds feed and fly around the pretty cherry blossom tree. We had the Clam Mateo and Bacon wrapped dates for appetizers and for our entrées we had the Pork Shank Osso Buco and the Dungeness Crab Stuffed Porobello. The appetizers we decent. The Clams were very fresh but the sauce that was used was very overpowering for my liking. I wasn't really able to taste the clams in this dish. The bacon wrapped dates we also decent but the sweetness of the dates over powered the bacon just a bit so I got more sweet than salty. The Pork Shank was cooked to perfection my only downfall with this dish was the red wine tomato sauce over the polenta, I wasn't a fan of the flavors together. The Dungeness crab stuffed portobello was good but the cheese topping was a little too much. All in all this place was quaint. I would return but I would try something different. The waitress we had was very welcoming and friendly.

Sweet Basil is a small cafe that is tucked away from the busy, touristy main strip of Cannon Beach. Expect extremely friendly and relaxed service. Very quaint and family run. The food options are organic, homemade, delicious, and healthy. You won't be disappointed. Everything tasted really fresh. The split pea soup is absolutely amazing and a must have! They also have a great beer selection! You won't be stuck with Budweiser here, they had a nice Belgium style sour. Delish! I missed out on their homemade pies but they looked delicious. I won't make that mistake next time I'm in the area. Prices are very reasonable and I would avoid all the crowds and popular restaurants to come here any day. Thank you to yelp for highlighting this lovely and perfect place to dine. It made my day!

Absolutely perfect. Relaxed, welcoming vibe with mellow live music; delicious food prepared thoughtfully with quality ingredients; and friendly, charming service. Hope to be back soon.

Overall, happy with this dining experience. We had the plentiful salad and the curry salmon, both very, very good. The bread which was an added cost($2.00) was nothing special or worth buying. My only true complaint is that the $25.00 salmon was a small salmon portion with a small portion of diced potatoes. While delicious, it seemed that there should have been more potatoes and a veggie included. Service was great and very pleasant!

We read the disclaimer about the wait time on the food coming out and we were fine with the wait since we were not in a hurry. I guess we didn't realize they meant we would have to wait 35+ minutes without even so much as water nor a check in from the waitress. We even stopped the waitress as she walked by to let her know we were ready to order and she said she'd be back when she had a chance. So we waited and waited and saw other people who came after us get served with nary a word from our waitress. We stood up and left without even being noticed, again, by the waitstaff. What a disappointment. Their "disclaimer" about taking their time to make the food does not excuse bad service!

Decided to visit this place after reading very good reviews on Yelp. So, we headed there for a Sunday dinner. The place was packed! After waitress sat us down we realized that there are no free tables in the restaurant. Very popular place! I orded Seafood Jamballaya and my wife had an organic chicken salad. Friend of ours had pork dish (which was huge!). All dishes were absolutely delicuous! Waitress was very friendly, and restaurant is clean. We had to wait for our food a little longer than in usual restaurant, but it was not a problem for us. We understood that place is packed, and they did not expect so many people for Sunday night dinner. We will be back for sure!!!

Very small restaurant and slow service. Menu and reviews made it sound much better than it was. Pulled pork was fine. Although it said it was a grilled cheese, which would indicate a grilled sandwich, this was not. Coleslaw was more like pickled cabbage. Chips were awful. Drinks came in plastic cups.

Great place for lunch! Had the cubano and the crab roll, which was great as it was not too heavy or too much dressing. Overall quite nice!

We loved our visit to this sweet "Sweet Basil" cafe. One review almost turned us off, but our experience was all good. We got seated immediately on Sat night at 6:30. We ordered the best clam/salmon/fish chowder I have ever eaten, and it came fast and hot. We then split a half salad (so so) and crawfish pot pie - spicy and filling. The waitress was lovely and present just enough. We will come back.

I gave it a zero, that is not a mistake. We were part of a large group at a conference in town and for lunch we were on our own. There were five of us. There was one person already there. We walked in, and the cook, very visible from the entrance, just looked at us. No greeting, just a stare (see last sentence of review). We looked around. The sign says, "please wait to be seated." We waited. An older woman eventually came toward us. No smile, a scowl. "How many?" Not looking at us. Her body language said, hurry up, hurry up. We followed her to a back room, kinda dark, I suppose the live music would be in there. She showed us two tables near each other along a long banquet bench. One of my friends said, "oh good we can just push these tables together." The crabby woman said, "No you can't. It's easier to serve you apart." Remember now, there was no one else in this room. Stunned, we sat meekly where she put us, and waited, and waited. It was a tomb in there. Finally, I said, "Let's go." We filed out through the skinny front room, and I told her as we left. "We're not staying." She was at the counter, looking at a newspaper. She gave a "humph" and did not say a word. Quite strange. Possibly the weirdest experience I've ever had in a restaurant. I did have to check myself and make sure we were in Oregon, not Washington, where pot is legal...

On my first trip to Cannon Beach, my date wanted to try out Sweet Basil's for supper. It's a hip little place, nice decor. Unfortunately, the hostess gave us a scowl and acted like she didn't want us there. It took us 15 minutes to get seated, despite the restaurant being half-full. We received menus, decided on what we wanted, then put our menus down and waited. And waited. In the meantime, another couple was seated, drink order taken, drinks served, and their order was taken while we sat. We tried to get the waitress' attention, but she kept ignoring us. There was another server there who spent more time talking to the bartender than actually doing anything (apparently, it was someone's girlfriend filling in for a server who didn't show up for work that evening). There was another couple whom we overheard complaining to each other that it had been an hour since they ordered a simple cheese plate... We were finally noticed by the waitress, and she took our drink/food order. It took a bit for the wine to come up, as the bartender was still talking to the temp server. Our waitress seemed to get more crabby as the evening went on. My date ordered the Dungeness Crab Stuffed Portobello, while I ordered the Chicken Pot Pie. We didn't have anywhere to go that evening, so we really didn't mind that it took an hour for the food to come out. She enjoyed her Stuffed Portobello, but my pot pie left something else to be desired. I'm not sure what spices were being used, but the result was that it tasted like dirt. I left hungry. The only reason I don't give it a one-star is that my date enjoyed her meal, despite the crummy, rude service. If I ever go back to Cannon Beach, I think I will see what else they have to offer.

Was very pleased to find somewhere that could accommodate my dietary needs. Therefore, I wasn't going to pick it apart. ....it was this or a granola bar from the glove box. Yes service was a little slow but i could easily see they were doing their best. Afterall, they were busy for a reason. I ordered a Cubano on gluten free bread. Best gluten free bread I've had to date. Making the overall sandwich very good. Having to swap out the bread on a sandwich for the gluten free usually detracts from the creation...not so here. I was pleasantly surprised! I walked in ready to put up with whatever I had to since they had actual food I could eat....but walked out feeling it was an overall pleasing experience. Yes, the price was a little high but that is the cost of real unadulterated food. And made very well to top it off .....no complaints here! Thank you!

Wonderful tapas restaurant, with local music. Also has some entrees on the menu. Limited seating but Several tables outside as well. Dates wrapped in bacon were wonderful, as were the pulled pork sliders and cheese board as small plates. Crab cake tree was verbose. Excellent salads. Good wine list. Quiet set-back courtyard setting on Main Street in town

Just got a message from the owner nitpicking my review for their slow service. Yes, Seasons was just as slow but we were fed up with waiting for food. It was a hot day and we were hungry, we just gave up and it happened to be at Seasons. SO YES, my original review was based on TIME because, as any common person knows, time is quite essential when going to a dining establishment. If you read my review, I was not being completely critical, but --wanting-- to visit again and try the food out because it does look like a delicious selection. Now I'm sad because the owner's online attitude has made me decide not to.... WORD TO THE WISE: People put honest reviews for good reason and if, as the owner, can't deal with that fact and therefore harass your patrons and would-be patrons for posting said reviews, then you have no business being on Yelp. Yelp is a place for people to judge businesses, pure and simple. A professional cafe owner would apologize for slow service, not make people feel bad for being honest. I see that you like to fire off a message to each negative review and everyone says the same thing: why are YOU mad? In summary: I WAS going to try Sweet Basil's next time I was in Cannon Beach but if this is the sort of treatment I get, then I'll be doing what I can to tell others to avoid this place. If you were gracious about criticism, then I might come back but I don't see that happening..... PS: If I get another message regarding this review, I can add more replies but I really don't want to drag down the average rating anymore....

Pretty good healthy alternative to the deep fried crap that covers Cannon Beach. Small spot and you'll probably have to wait. We got our order 2 go on a Sat afternoon and waited about 35 min. Overall, good was good and a nice change from all the fish n chips, pizza and chowder bread bowls. The crab roll sandwich, veggie wrap and crab/artichoke melt were all delicious.

The clam chowder was fresh and good. but for a place that calls itself "WINE BAR" it was pathetic. We ordered a tempranillo which was essentially stale beyond its living recognition. The malbec also seemed to be open too long to make it drinkable. The service is mediocre. NOT GOING BACK

Not sure what's up with the 4 1/2 star average and 5 star ratings. My partner and I either hit an incredibly off meal OR... there is a large difference in perceived quality in this adorable vacation town. I'll agree with the other reviews: Cramped. Scowls on harried, sour hostess. Quoted 45 min. wait despite 2 couples ahead of us on the wait list and 3 tables clearly preparing to leave. (To our luck the other 2 couples simply left, leaving us first in line and sure enough the first of the 3 tables cleared and we were seated w/in 10 minutes). POOR food. Menu says most dishes are prepared by one person; sometimes 2 and a focus is on quality, but none of that was evident from what was served: Clams Mateo were adequate, but nothing to write home about. Under seasoned; thin broth despite the bacon, tomato, onion, herbs and white wine; small quantity of clams and 3 thin slices of baguettes to sop up the broth. Crab-stuffed Portobello mushroom was atrocious, sh*t on a shingle - COVERED in overpowering mayo, parmesan and provolone, a tasteless tomato and with seemingly tasteless, watered-down crab. Salt punched up the flavor a bit, but with a near absence of any taste to the crab and the overpowering mayo and cheese it was nearly inedible. This was served with greens and a house dressing of which the dressing was similarly poor. Hard to go wrong with bacon wrapped dates... I mean... it's just dates wrapped with bacon... but they did with these, with nary a taste of the claimed bleu cheese stuffing. Finished with a poor pour of white wine left me - the more critical of our duo - completely unhappy, but more surprisingly, my dinner companion whom has never complained about a restaurant in the year I've known her, complaining for the first time ever. I'd be in for a second try in case this was an off night or an off meal... expect for the number of 1 and 2 star ratings tell me the 4 and 5 star ratings are probably over ratings; the consistency of the "hostess / staff had sour attitude" ratings tell me that's a constant. Cannon Beach is one of my favorite towns to visit, and I visit more than 3 times a year... but the large number of poor restaurants really get in the way of enjoying the town.

Seemingly the perfect place for a warm bowl of soup and sandwich, Sweet Basil's Café was good, not great. This tiny cafe was somewhat quaint, with a cozy atmosphere on this stormy day. The open setting allowed for a partial view into the kitchen. The booth seating was comfortable yet the sterile Formica tables left a lot to be desired. The dark space behind us, I imagine, is probably utilized for their evening service. -- It had a nice bar with a trendier feel; but was closed during the lunch service. The premise of the healthy food was alluring, however they use too much in the way of mayonnaise as filler. The Cajun red bean soup was delicious and warmed us following our cold & windy beach walk. We shared the the Crab artichoke melt on gluten free bread, which was ok if you like lots of mayonnaise... I was hoping for more fresh crab with less mayonnaise - especially for the price. At the end of the day, a 3 star 'a-ok' rating seems fitting to me for this restaurant. When I'm back in town I will probably go somewhere else for lunch. The food was tasty enough and service pleasant enough; but nothing stood out to warrant heaps of praise.

Raciest restaurant? Or they just don't understand the meaning of waiting list? The experience at the restaurant was horrible. I was there with my family a few weeks ago for dinner. The place looked like packed with people as I could not see all the way in side. We were greeted by one of the staff at the door but were told there is no available table. So we put my name on the waiting list, where there was no one else on the list. We were sitting at a outdoor table placed right in front of the restaurant which is maybe 10 yards away from the door at max. We were waiting there hoping the lady call my name. In the meanwhile another family, which was white folks, went into the restaurant and they were brought in. It was odd but thinking about possibility of reservation, we waited more. And after a couple more families were guided inside, I went in and asked why they did not let us in while there were available tables. Then the staff responded they don't look for people waiting and we must be on site to be in. Hey wait a second, I was there the whole time and they did not even told me about that up front. Because I am Asian, do you guys discriminate your customers? I was in plain sight from them for over 30 minutes and they did not make any attempt to let us in even though we were on the top of the waiting list. I don't know if the food they make is tasty but I don't really want to have food made by such people with discriminating mind.

Claw chowder was delicious. Crab and artichoke half-sandwich was very meaty, but nothing to call home about. Service was great and the pies looked great, although he didn't try any. Outdoor seating was almost comfortable. Cool place!

Came here with my wife and was our only stop in cannon beach! Wonderful atmosphere with live music, friendly staff and delicious wines! The pies (we had the chocolate pecan which was amazing!) are all made by the owner's mother. My wife had the crab stuffed portobello mushrooms and I had the seafood jumbalaya - both were outstanding. Definitely a great place for a couple's night out :-)

Delicious + unique blends of flavorful food, friendly service, and a great place to grab a warm lunch on a beautiful day in Cannon Beach. If it's nice and sunny out, grab a table outside and watch for the hummingbirds buzzing by the feeders just outside the door. Highly recommended!

This place was absolutely amazing! I had the courtyard chicken salad sandwich and each bite was better than the last! I couldn't believe how amazing it was! We chose Sweet Basil's Cafe as the patio was dog-friendly and there were many vegetarian options for a my friend. I'm so glad that we did! Definitely check this place out if you're in the area! The food is spectacular and the people are incredibly friendly.

Ticked every box: great food, prepared brilliantly, lovely people, reasonably priced. Absolutely recommended. After several days of eating out for breakfast, lunch and dinner, you sometimes just want a healthy, tasty plate of food. We could not have asked for more here. Firstly the coffee is amazing & it's drip coffee! We were told it was infused with cinnamon, rum and pecans during roasting and it was so nice. Then the menu, we had a panini each and the ingredients shone through in them both, so fresh and delicious. We finished with some pie (for lunch!) which had lovely crumbly pastry with fantastic fillings (Apple for my wife, pecan for me). Add in the happy, cheery people who worked there and it made for a perfect lunch. Oh, and we had our dog beside us as we had an outside table, making it convenient too.

A little hole in the wall, my husband wasn't so sure it would be worth it. But from the moment we walked in, the servers were contagiously friendly and the food was an absolute party in our mouths. Fully worth the honor of a special dinner on our honeymoon. A great merlot to begin with. The shrimp and artichoke hearts appetizer caught our attention big time. We were speechless after feeding each other. Salmon in curry and coconut milk for the entree and we shared a Marion berry pie that exploded with pleasure in our mouths. Don't leave Cannon Beach without experiencing this culinary extravaganza. And if you're gluten or dairy free or vegan, they cater to you as well. The menu has a caution on it that they'd rather you be ready for the wait than be hoping for a quick meal, but I thought they had perfect timing throughout.

What a find, perfect for a light and healthy lunch. Very reasonable prices along with great food. Next time you're in town looking for a light fare give Sweet Basil's a try. Being your on beach time, don't come wanting to get in and out in a hurry.

I didn't even get a chance to eat here! We came here after watching the sunset and although the atmosphere was nice (live music, quite people) , we didn't get greeted and as we walked back and forth before sitting down still nothin. Got a chance to flip through the menu and still nothing. Then I read the front page which was really pushy and almost seemed rude and left a nasty taste in my mouth. Maybe needs to be reworded because after reading it I felt like "our food is the best food, you better like it and you better wait for it because you walked In here we don't even care your here now we have to make everything from scratch so please do not complain!" I was like wow! I haven't even got water or a hello no wonder it probably takes 2 hours for an appetizer. We left. We complained to each other for like an hour of how distastefuly that was written! Please don't push customers out the door before you even welcome them in!

My husband and I visited Sweet Basil's upon the recommendation of a friend who lives in the area. We went on a Saturday night and wished we were staying another full day so that we could go back again! We started with an order of the salmon bruschetta which was absolutely delicious! I ordered the seafood jambalaya and my husband ordered the crawfish pie and both were amazing-my jambalaya was not too spicy and loaded with crab, crawfish, shrimp and sausage. My husbands crawfish pie was rich and decadent with a wonderfully flaky crust. The staff was friendly and helpful and we enjoyed the entire experience. This our new favorite restaurant in the northern coast area and we will definitely be back!

I was very impressed with food. Especially given that there are not many good places to eat in Seaside/Cannon Beach and those that are considered to be great places are not all that great actually. I had crab stuffed portobello mushroom. It was incredible! My husband had Pork Shank Osso Bucco which was incredible as well! My mother in law had crab cakes which were amazing! My father in law had Crawfish Etoufee and he wasn't disappointed given the fact that he spent several years in New Orleans and is quite aware of how god etoufee tastes! Well done!

This place was quaint and had parking (the latter being the reason we went there). We were only looking for a snack so ordered two glasses of wine and shared a bowl of their seafood chowder. My date's glass of wine was the bottom of the bottle (we could see them pouring it) and tasted funky. He asked for a new glass and they were gracious about replacing it. The reds were stored out in the open/at room temperature, which was surprising for a place that calls itself a wine bar. But the pours were fairly generous. The chowder was WONDERFUL. Clearly fresh with hearty chunks of seafood (a thousand times better than a bowl we had the day before). I would definitely eat that again. Perhaps the biggest downfall here was that one of our waitresses was not offering service with a smile. It appeared she may have just had something against us (or perhaps just my date), though, since she didn't appear to be so grumpy with other tables.

PROS: Neither of us got food poisoning; waitstaff was acceptable. CONS: Food, atmosphere, decor. I don't see how it gets good reviews on Yelp, this place is run-down dive. Cramped seating, beat-up old furnishings, all the charm of eating at, say, a construction site or a factory driveway. Also, other reviewers don't make clear this is a sandwich place, and not anything the slightest bit more upscale (which it should be, given that this is on the main drag of Cannon Beach!). The food was miserable. We had a tuna melt and a crab salad. Both of them tasted like they were made at the Safeway deli. Probably the worst example of each that we could remember having eaten. Very little seasonings and what there was, was goofy. The crab salad was spiced with ketchup and horseradish, not exactly a winning combination. And the salad consisted of some crab with this weird combination of flavors dumped on a few lettuce leaves. Not exactly worth $19.50. The tuna melt had a few poor tortilla chips and some over-sweet cole slaw, in a relish-size little container. Even the bathroom was beat to heck and not remodeled within living memory. Next time, I will try to find a place in Cannon Beach which has at least a modicum of style. And odds have to be that it will have more decent food, since this place is so bad.

I'll give this place one star because the menu looked good, and by saying this I don't mean it was printed on fancy paper, nothing like that. It was promising, and we were looking forward to trying different tapas. But we didn't get to... We were seated, and we waited, and waited some more, and didn't even get "we'll be right with you". No one came out to take our orders. We left, end of story.

  • marie b.

It's ok...but the food doesn't blow your mind and you do sometimes wait a long time for it even if there's only a few people there. I think it's the best place in town for a veggie to eat even if it's not amazing food. The last time I got the apple cheddar Panini it was lukewarm cheese not melted thoroughly and was pretty disappointing. I want to love this place but I just like it. The owner is a talented chef but may need to rework the menu, work on quality control and wait staff who can sometimes be a bit surly.

Wanted to try their food since my allergies limit me. We walked it, was busy but there was a table. I moved out of the doorway so my spouse could come in. The waitress(older woman) came by and in a rude tone asked my husband to move it. We left, if that's how it is before we even sit down then no thanks!

Live in Cannon Beach and in my job provide a lot of recommendations on where to eat. I have a few favorites and Sweet Basils is one of them. My wife and I do small plate dinners often and the options and wine bar atmosphere is perfect. When we do full dinners we are always impressed. Just had the best seafood jumbalaya about an hour ago. Not all creole food but when you have a chef with New Orleans history it is a shame not to try it. You will enjoy it.

    (5)
  • Brian W.

I wanted this place to deliver, sadly it did not. It has an interesting creole influence to the menu but I think it might be too ambitious for the staff to be able to execute. After our appetizers we decided to leave. Paid for our two drinks and two apps and left. Originally we wanted two courses but... Buffalo and bacon meatballs were dry, I think the idea was to provide some fat to a notoriously lean cut. That did not happen. Dry. I didn't taste any bacon flavor. The sauce was a simple, over used, chunky red sauce. The same sauce used on our other item. Served with a generic unexciting plain baguette. The decor definitely needs upgrading, the dining room felt cluttered with boxes, cleaning supplies ect. The carpet needs replacing in some ares of the dining room. The poor waitress, the only one covering the entire place, needed help. Long wait times on drinks ect. But we were prepared for it as a previous review pointed that out. The reviewer since had a spat with the owner online about the situation. I do respect and encourage owners to be able to rebuttal on an opinion. Especially if it is an impatient tourist cryer. I am not sure if I will give it a second chance, perhaps in the slow season after the remodel and when the new chef starts.

This restaurant's idea of service is amateur hour. Be prepared to wait way, way too long for everything. Their "wine bar" is a joke, they won't even allow you to sit at a proper table without ordering food from the adjoined restaurant. It seems that the owner has no clue how to run a restaurant.

    (2)
  • Samantha C.

Our group of four waited twenty minutes for a seat. We were glared at and not greeted by the staff. Once the party behind us was sat down we got the memo that they didn't want us there. Rude and judgmental staff, I would not recommend. The funny thing is they turned away two doctors and two engineers, next time they might want to be rude to their young looking guests.

  • Scott H.

The food here is really good. It's a little pricey, but for the most part, you get what you pay for. I got the Osso Bucco which resembles Haystack Rock. It's a memorable dish. If you want to get your slow cooked meat on, I highly recommend. Very knowledgeable wine staff and we found a wine that I have been scouring the earth for since we tried it. If you are wine type person and like a good meal, this would be a good spot. Service was not so great. It was a little inattentive and aloof. If I'm going to pay for a cheese plate, I would like to know exactly what cheese it is. Sorry I'm a snob like that. Location is not ideal. It's one of the last places on the "Strip" in Cannon Beach, but it's worth the walk. You'll need it anyway after the Osso Bucco.

I'm sorry to say that this was my least favorite place where I ate while visiting Cannon Beach for the weekend. The reviews seemed great, but the restaurant was a disappointment. It was somewhat busy when we were there but not seemingly unmanageable; however, one of the dishes we ordered never arrived and we asked for the drink menu to order drinks but the staff never came back for our drink order. Other than the service being pretty bad, the food was only okay. There were aspects of the food that were enjoyable but as a whole, the food could have been better. One item that was ordered was the shrimp roll, and the shrimp were great but the roll that they came on to be eaten with was not the right type of bread, it was a strange mix. Truly, the best part about the restaurant was watching a hummingbird flit about outside the window.

Outstanding in every way! A complete surprise since we had no idea the joint specializes in cajun food. According to vegans, this place rocks so we were thrilled to patronize. Utter bliss - top 5 meals experienced in Oregon and this comes from my bf who is a portland native. We enjoyed immensely the berenjeña con vegan queso, portobello étouffée, and vegan gumbo. We were just thrilled by our carefully crafted meal and remarkable service delivered by our amazing server, Shelly. She was attentive, helpful in her meal suggestions, and engaged us in personal and positive ways. Chef John is an enlightened and innovative artist.

For a Saturday night, it was decently busy. We brought our little one and they thankfully had a (one) highchair, and the wait was only 15 min. There was live music playing in the wine bar attached to the restaurant, the kitchen is right in the front, open to the dining area, which was pretty darn cool. The chefs were busy and happy! Once we were seated, we received our appetizers fairly quickly: a salami board (all wonderful) with three cured meats, an olive tapenade and some bread. I had a vegetable pot pie, which was absolutely wonderful. My baby boy enjoyed sharing it with me as well, which was really nice too. My husband had a seafood étouffée which he said was quite delicious. We had Marionberry pie for dessert as well and enjoyed every bite. We will definitely return next time we are in town. We noticed that there are a lot of gluten free options as well, which we know a bunch of friends and family members will be pleased about.

I was interested in this restaurant as it was organic and had vegan/vegetarian options. My boyfriend and I sat down and a waitress didn't come see us until 20 min after. It took us about 40 minutes just to receive our bread and butter and about an hour and twenty minutes to get my vegetable wrap. The food was good but the service was horrible. One waitress was very irritable and wasn't treating customers well. Overall the food was good, yet pricy. The service ruined it all. Be aware of the wait if you choose this restaurant!

I will say that we were greeted warmly and advised to seat ourselves wherever we liked when we walked in here. Our immediate impression was a nice one. There were a few times when we perceived what we thought was curtness from our server but didn't take it personally because some moments she was very nice. However, fast forward to the end of our meal, it took 30+ min to get our check. There were potential customers walking up, looking at the menu, then at the lack of seating, then walking away. Service was taking so long, one couple got tired of waiting for their order to even be taken. They arrived after our plates were cleared and left while we were STILL waiting for our check. Boyfriend went inside to try to pay after the first 20 minutes and was told that only our server could take care of our check, so he sat back down and we waited some more. Another 15 minutes went by when he was finally able to get her attention and asked for the check a second time. Her reaction? "Oh". ...which told us that she completely forgot about us. A 2-star rating may be a little unfair. Maybe they had an off day. If there was a half-star option, maybe a 2.5 would be more appropriate but I don't think our overall experience deserves 3 stars. We were there for lunch, and the food itself was decent but I wouldn't say it's anything to go out of your way for. Dinner menu looks better.

Heard great reviews and were not disappointed, marvelous bean soups that dance on your tongue w/ just the right amount of spice/kick. Great sandwiches and a fine lunch experience.

Sweet spot for lunch in Cannon Beach! My family ate here for lunch before exploring downtown Cannon Beach. There is outdoor and indoor seating. We sat towards the back of the restaurant, near the bar. The booth was a little cramped, but not uncomfortable and we eagerly waited for our food, which wasn't too long. I had the Veggie wrap, while my parents had pulled pork sandwiches. Our food came with chips that tasted of thyme. (Yum!) My sandwich was fresh and natural. I took the other half home with me! The service was good and people were friendly. If I'm in the area again, I'd eat here again!

Finally some vegetarian food at the beach that's not a garden burger. Tried 3 different dishes and they all tasted great. Not fast service, but worth the wait for us vegg heads . The solo guitarist was a throw back to Woodstock.

I could have eaten bowlfulls of their salmon chowder. The rest of our food was ok, but nothing special. It's fairly pricey, even for organic.

My husband Googled the best restaurants in Cannon Beach and Sweet Bail's Cafe had four stars. We checked the menu, it looked good, so filled with pleasant anticipation we had dinner there tonight. First we ordered the bacon wrapped dates and the camarones and artichoke hearts. The dates arrived sizzling hot but mushy and way too sweet for the bacon which one couldn't even taste because of the over powering flavor of the dates. Meriwether's in Portland does the bacon wrapped dates also and they do an excellent job! The shrimp and artichoke dish was so so, considering that I had expected the artichoke hearts to be fresh not canned. This is a restaurant that advertises that it sources it's ingredients locally and that they are fresh and organic. What a disappointment. For my main meal I ordered the mojo crab salad and asked it be served without the remoulade. After all I wanted to taste the fresh crab. (Aside: it is presently crab season and the crab in Cannon Beach is spectacular!.) When the salad arrived the crab looked dry and a strange reddish color. It tasted okay albeit very dry. I asked the server about the crab and whether they had sourced it from the crab boats from which the other restaurants get their fresh crab, (I had a crab omelet at the Wayfarer Restaurant that morning and the server at the Wayfarer informed me that the boat had just that moment left them with freshly caught crab.) Alas, the server at Sweet Bail's Cafe said that the crab was canned!!! No wonder it was dry and oddly colored. I'll give this restaurant a miss the next time we're in town - which is several times a year.

We came here on a Saturday night. It's a really small place so we had to wait for about 30-45 minutes, luckily there was room at the small wine bar so we sat and had a glass of wine. They have a live jazz band playing which was awesome to listen to during our visit. We finally were seated. I wish they had a bigger place, I felt kind of cramped and awkared sitting my the window because it was next to the front porch where people would walk by and look. Service was great and the food was delicious. I ordered their Bruschetta of Salmon which was really good! For my entree I ordered their Shrimp Creole which was a big serving and flavorful, satisfied my appetite because I was craving that flavor. My boyfriend ordered their special which was a crawfish pot pie which he liked.

Best clam chowder in Cannon Beach. Food quality is excellent here. If they are busy don't rush them, everything is made from scratch. Excellent gluten free options too

On Saturday night Nov 1 my three friends and I ate at Sweet Basil's Café. The dinners ordered were Chicken Pot Pie, Jambalaya, and a pork dish. The Seafood Jambalaya is truly one of the best meals I have had in a very long time. My companions all loved their meals as well. The service was great. We were seated immediately. The waitress was wonderful. There was also live music that was very nice. We had a wonderful experience - absolutely no complaints. It will be a return to the next time I go to Cannon Beach which I am hoping will be soon.

We can not recommend this restaurant at all. The seating is cramped and the waiting time for even a cold tapas is way too long. We inquired politely about the long wait and our "server" responded in a less than friendly manner. We were told there were only 3 burners in the kitchen and all were in use to prepare entrees for the large table next to us. We explained that our initial order for tapas did not require use of any burners. She did bring the shrimp "martini" about 10 minutes later but informed us any other additional hot tapas would be a long time in coming-- and this was at 8PM. Our tapas was nothing special and we left shortly afterward. Unfortunately, it was too late to dine elsewhere as restaurants close early here in winter.

Little cafe tucked down a breezeway. Great food & service. Fresh, everything made from scratch when ordered, so dont be in a hurry. Hubby had pulled pork grilled cheese & i had the chicken salad sandwich on gluten free bread baked locally. Both were delicious--the bread is one of the better GF breads i've had. This little cafe also is vegan and vegetarian friendly. Many yummy-sounding selections to choose from.

We came on a Wednesday evening before the big crowds & had no problem getting a table. The food was excellent, the decor nice & there was live music. I also like the kitchen being open & accessible to thank the owner/chef personally for a great experience.

My favorite restaurant in Cannon Beach, aside Cannon Beach Hardware. Organic, wild, and fresh... The kind of food worth paying for.

This review is for the wait not the food. The place has 1 slow old cook and two servers, one of them a bit cranky. There was no one in front of us and lots of empty tables but it took a long time to get seated and we never got our drinks because we left. After being there for 30 minutes and realizing they only had one slow cook and there were at least 4 tables ahead of us still waiting. We gave up and left.

Yum! Came to Cannon Beach to celebrate New Year's Eve and was flying without dinner reservations, a risk I know. I had been reading the Yelp reviews after we checked into our hotel and thought this place looked interesting. We were definitely not disappointed. The place is small....six tables in the bar and four in the main restaurant area. As it was NYE and we didn't have a reservation we ended up sitting at a smallish bistro table in the bar, but really, in Oregon, bar is just an extension of a restaurant. I picked what I wanted off the menu and didn't even make it to ordering the dessert course (and you know I must have been full since my dessert choice was my favorite, creme brulee). I started with a cup (really it was a small bowl) of crawfish and corn chowder. I don't know if this is normally on their menu, it as listed on the New Year's Eve specials. If you are ever here and stop in, I highly recommend this chowder. I didn't even bother with opening the oyster crackers. I would be completely happy with a big bowl of that soup on just about any given day. For my main course I went with the crab cakes. There were a number of reviews that said these were a must try and the were, in a word, amazing. They were light and crumbly and you could taste the crab over the panko (that is a big one for me with crab cakes). There was a drizzle of a sauce over the top and a dipping sauce 'decoration' along the side of the plate. I managed to eat one of them and I was stuffed. Left the salad, primarily, untouched on the plate, but I can eat salad at home. My husband started with the olive plate and it was beautiful. It had a good variety of olives, some pickled asparagus and peppers. A good starter to a meal and reminded me of something we might have found on our adventures in Portugal. For his main, he went with the Crawfish Etoufee. It was really good. Just the right amount of spice and an ample serving. By the time it came to ordering dessert, I had to take a pass, though, based on the rest of the meal, I'm thinking it might have been a creme brulee worthy of making it onto my top ten list. Next time. The music they had playing was a little awkward in that there was really not enough room for them in the small space, but they adjusted to make sure they were amplified appropriately to the space. While the music was not what I would necessarily choose to listen to, it was perfect for the venue and added to the ambiance. Again, I don't know if this was a normal thing, or something special for New Year's Eve. All in all, it was a great way to celebrate the end of one year and ring in a new one.

I don't think I was prepared for what a cluster it was going to be in Cannon Beach on a Saturday. It was like Cape Cod had gotten Oregonfied, and worse, there was no parking. In the midst of this nightmare, and having only an hour to feed myself, Yelp pointed toward Basil's. In spite of all of the issues with service everyone talks about, the baked eggplant sandwich is super good. The bread is high quality, there is pesto involved, and cheese, and the eggplant was baked perfectly. It is served with tortilla chips (nothing special) and cole slaw (ok). Service wasn't speedy, but who wants speedy? It was friendly, though, and there's a nice patio if you like. The only downside is that the bathroom could stand to be prettified. But, if you find yourself in Cannon Beach on some sort of vacation or staycation, give Basil's a try.

We risked not having reservations on a busy, sunny evening and restaurant hopped. We strolled around looking at menus. We originally thought we would come back to this restaurant for lunch instead of dinner. We went to Lumberyard first and it was a 50 minute wait so we went back to Sweet Basil's and SO GLAD WE DID! First, let me say that this restaurant is really not designed for families with small children. There simply isn't enough room but we loved the quaintness of it for couples! There was just 2 of us. We sat in the bar at one of the bistro tables and it was perfect. There was a great live band, The Coconuts, playing and it was very romantic! We started with the cheese plate which had a great assortment of cheese's that we had never heard of but were EXCELLENT! My boyfriend then had the small tapas bacon and bison meatballs. He thought they were excellent! He only had one suggestion to the wait staff and that was that they should include an extra slice of bread to mop up the leftover sauce. :) I had the pork shank over parmesan polenta (osso buco) and it was DIVINE!! The sauce was incredible and the pork just falls off the bone. You definitely get your monies worth and we ended up taking half home. Beer and wine were very good and we did get dessert to go which was just okay. We will definitely go again!!

My wife and I were looking for some time away from the kids for a quiet evening and we were very pleased with Sweet Basil. It is just what I like: quaint, quiet (even with the live music playing 15 ft behind us), with good, freshly prepared food. Just know what you are looking for and you won't be disappointed. If you want a loud, party atmosphere or fast food and service -- don't come here. Don't get me wrong, even though the staff was busy they still met our needs. There are only 8 or so tables, so they are walking by a lot, but they don't stop right before you are going to take your first bite of food and ask you, "Is it delicious?!". Also, you might have to wait a little for a table since this is a place that people like and it is relatively small. Definitely worth it though for this couple. The osso bocu was very good.

Yes there is quite a wait. Expect it, it even says to on the menu. The ingredients are fresh and tasty, but some of the dishes aren't put together all that well or are missing some pzazz. I'd love to love it, but it was just okay. Not the friendliest staff. One could say downright pissy.

Not impressed. Family stopped in for a late lunch and the staff had bad attitudes. The food was alright, nothing special. Their organic PBJ sand which... Safeway organic peanut butter out of plastic jar. Questionable. It really came down to the snarky staff bad mouthing the customers in the kitchen. The owner came in later and the attitude did not improve. If you are starving the food works but we like to patronize places with a better vibe/feel
